• Attorney General Pam Bondi issued new federal guidance Monday urging agencies to prioritize English-only operations, aligning with President Trump’s March executive order declaring English the official U.S. language. The move rolls back Clinton-era multilingual outreach and calls for AI tools and reinvestment in English proficiency and assimilation programs.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — In a sweeping policy shift, Attorney General Pam Bondi directed federal agencies Monday to prioritize English-only communication across government programs, rescinding longstanding multilingual outreach policies and signaling a broader effort to unify public services under a single language.

The directive follows President Trump’s March executive order that established English as the official language of the federal government and rolled back a 2000 Clinton-era mandate that had encouraged accommodations for Americans with limited English proficiency.

A Shift in Language Policy

“President Trump’s Executive Order marks a pivotal step toward unifying our nation through a common language and enhancing efficiency in federal operations,” said Assistant Attorney General Harmeet K. Dhillon in a statement.

The new guidance instructs agencies to “determine which of their programs, grants and policies might serve the public at large better if operated exclusively in English.” It also suspends the DOJ’s web page that offered multilingual access guidelines and civil rights advice tied to language-based discrimination.

Bondi’s office said federal funds should be used primarily to support assimilation and English education—not translation.

“While we respect linguistic diversity, taxpayer dollars should support long-term integration, not permanent dependency on translation,” said Bondi in a press briefing.

AI as a Bridge — Not a Substitute

While curbing government translation services, the DOJ guidance encourages the use of artificial intelligence tools to aid non-English speakers in accessing essential services. Officials said AI could reduce costs and streamline government interactions for all Americans—without creating language silos.

Agencies that continue to offer services in other languages must now include a disclaimer stating that English is the official federal language.

Critics and Cultural Impacts

Civil rights advocates have warned the move could disproportionately affect immigrant communities, especially in California, where nearly 45% of residents speak a language other than English at home. But Bondi’s office said the emphasis on English promotes unity without infringing on heritage.

“This isn’t about exclusion,” Dhillon added. “It’s about helping every American fully participate in civic life through a shared language.”
