- GOP leaders, including Speaker Johnson and Senate Minority Schumer, paused a nonbinding resolution urging DOJ to release Epstein-related documents before the August recess. Despite rising bipartisan pressure, including an unusual Massie-Khanna discharge petition, the matter has been deferred to allow the administration time. The delay reignites debate over transparency, executive authority, and accountability on high-profile investigations.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — House Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) announced on Monday that the chamber will not vote on a resolution calling for the public release of documents tied to Jeffrey Epstein prior to its August recess. The decision comes amidst mounting pressure from conservative factions and bipartisan efforts aimed at compelling greater transparency in the Trump administration.
Johnson affirmed that the White House and House Republicans are unified in their belief in “maximum transparency” and emphasized his desire to allow executive action to proceed unimpeded before Congress advances further measures.
“There is no daylight between the House Republicans, the House, and the president on maximum transparency,” Johnson stated.
“He has asked the attorney general to request the grand jury files…All of that is in process right now.” (CBS News, Deseret News, ABC News)

The resolution—advanced by the House Rules Committee last week—would direct Attorney General Pam Bondi to release “all credible” records, communications, and metadata from the Epstein and Maxwell investigations. Though nonbinding, it served as a symbolic gesture amid frustration from conservatives.
Meanwhile, Rep. Thomas Massie (R-Ky.) and Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) have introduced a bipartisan discharge petition to compel a floor vote on the matter. While the petition is unlikely to mature before recess, its presence underscores the issue’s cross-party resonance. (ABC News)
Johnson dismissed abrupt procedural moves as imprudent. “Discharge petitions are never a good idea in the House,” he contended, asserting the majority’s stated position aligns with the president’s. (ABC News)
MAGA Base and Democratic Pressure
The decision to delay has drawn criticism from the MAGA wing. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.) warned on X:
“If you tell the base…dangling bits of red meat no longer satisfies. They want the whole steak dinner.” (Deseret News)

At the same time, Democrats are capitalizing on the moment. Rep. Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) and Sen. Chuck Schumer (D-N.Y.) have urged full disclosure, asserting that commission of wrongdoing involving elites erodes public trust. (AP News)
Executive Authority vs. Legislative Oversight
The administration insists the Department of Justice is already working on unsealing relevant grand jury transcripts, a move authorized by President Trump. Johnson argued that Congress should await those developments before exerting legislative authority. Critics, however, argue that a nonbinding resolution lacks teeth unless backed by enforceable mechanisms.
What Lies Ahead
As Congress departs for recess, the issue is unlikely to recede. Massie and Khanna’s petition could ripen during the hiatus, setting the stage for a post-recess showdown. Absent new information, pressure may intensify within the GOP, forcing a reckoning over partisanship versus principle.
Is transparency best served by executive initiative—or does congressional authority demand a firmer legislative role?
