Online threats against former President Barack Obama surged after President Trump and DNI Tulsi Gabbard accused his administration of treason in relation to Russian election interference. The accusations reignited partisan tensions and prompted debate over free speech, political accountability, and the line between criticism and incitement.
WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — Former President Barack Obama has become the focus of a wave of online threats following accusations of treason from President Donald Trump and Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard. The explosive claims, centering on the Obama administration’s handling of intelligence surrounding Russian interference in the 2016 election, have triggered a cascade of inflammatory rhetoric across fringe and mainstream social media platforms.
A report from the Global Project Against Hate and Extremism (GPAHE) shows that between July 17 and July 20, threats and calls for imprisonment or execution of Obama surged following Gabbard’s release of a DNI report alleging misconduct by the former president’s intelligence officials.
Treason Allegations and AI-Generated Imagery
The controversy ignited when Gabbard accused the Obama administration of manipulating intelligence to “lay the groundwork for what was essentially a yearslong coup against President Trump.” Gabbard announced her intention to refer the matter to the Justice Department for possible prosecution.
President Trump escalated the matter days later by posting an AI-generated video on Truth Social, depicting Obama being arrested and jailed. The symbolic clip rapidly spread across platforms, becoming a rallying point for Trump’s most ardent supporters.
“He’s guilty. This was treason,” Trump declared at a rally on Tuesday. “They tried to steal the election. They did things nobody’s ever even imagined.”
He added, “It’s time to go after people,” expanding his accusations to include former CIA Director John Brennan and other top Obama-era officials.

Online Threats Surge Across Platforms
GPAHE’s report, cited by Newsweek, found stark increases in extremist language aimed at Obama:
On Truth Social, comments calling for Obama’s execution or imprisonment jumped from three to 36 — a 1,100 percent increase.
On Gab, such rhetoric rose from nine to 48 comments — up 433 percent.
On Telegram, the number rose from zero to 12.
“The combination of Director Gabbard's and President Trump's conspiracy-laden and racist posts not only inflamed extremists, but further normalized language and ideas that are completely unacceptable in a thriving democracy,” GPAHE told Newsweek.
The group warned of a recurring pattern of violent rhetoric surges following targeted posts by the president or administration officials.
Trump Administration Responds
The Trump White House rejected the charge that the rhetoric amounts to incitement.

“President Trump and the entire administration strongly condemn all forms of violence,” said spokesperson Davis Ingle, adding that the administration “believes in accountability and that individuals who participate in criminal activity should be held to the fullest extent of the law.”
A spokesperson for DNI Gabbard echoed the sentiment, stating: “The Director also believes in shining light on the truth, investigating wrongdoing, and holding those who participate in criminal activities accountable.”
Obama’s Office Issues Rebuttal
In a rare official statement, Obama’s office responded to the allegations.
“Out of respect for the office of the presidency, our office does not normally dignify the constant nonsense and misinformation flowing out of this White House with a response. But these claims are outrageous enough to merit one,” the statement read.
Obama’s spokesperson Patrick Rodenbush added:
“Nothing in the document issued last week undercuts the widely accepted conclusion that Russia worked to influence the 2016 presidential election, but did not successfully manipulate any votes.”
Rodenbush referenced the 2020 Senate Intelligence Committee report, led by then-Chairman Marco Rubio, which reaffirmed those conclusions.
Is the clash between past and present administrations a reckoning with truth—or a dangerous new frontier of political escalation?
