ATHENS, Ala. (TDR) — An Alabama woman could face the death penalty after authorities say she beat her infant son to death in a case that stunned first responders and left an entire community grieving.
Morgan Thornton, 35, was originally charged with aggravated child abuse following a harrowing 911 call early Friday morning. But within hours, the charge was upgraded to capital murder after the baby succumbed to his injuries in a nearby hospital.

Deputies with the Limestone County Sheriff’s Office responded to a medical emergency shortly after midnight at the 15000 block of Estate Drive in Athens. They arrived to find an infant with traumatic injuries, showing “no signs of life.” EMTs were able to resuscitate the child temporarily, locating a pulse before rushing the baby to a hospital.
“Please keep this family and everyone who responded to this heartbreaking scene in your prayers,” said Sheriff Joshua McLaughlin.
“While the outcome is devastating, I’m incredibly proud of our deputies, firefighters, EMTs, hospital staff, and DHR workers who did absolutely everything in their power to save this innocent child.”
According to the sheriff’s office, Thornton was quickly identified as the prime suspect. She appeared intoxicated when officers arrived and was immediately taken into custody. Authorities also secured a blood sample for toxicology testing.

Investigators said she seemed disoriented and confused. That demeanor continued in court.
During a bond hearing on Friday, Thornton appeared before a judge who informed her of the upgraded capital murder charge. She reportedly replied, “I don’t understand.” The court denied her bond.
In an interview with Huntsville’s WAFF-TV, Thornton offered limited recollection of the events.
“I put my son to bed,” she said. “I swaddled him and put him to bed at 7 o’clock, and then something happened.”
When pressed by a reporter about what happened next, she responded:
“Tried to give him CPR. That’s all.”
Thornton’s next court appearance is scheduled for Tuesday, where prosecutors are expected to present additional evidence. Under Alabama law, capital murder convictions are punishable by life without parole or the death penalty.
Neighbors told WAFF they were in a state of disbelief over the allegations, expressing sorrow for the family and those who responded to the horrifying scene.
The investigation remains ongoing, and authorities have not released the child’s name. No further details have been made public about Thornton’s criminal history or mental state prior to the incident.
“The outcome is tragic beyond words,” said one law enforcement official. “But our job now is to pursue justice for this child with everything we have.”
