- Reigning 100m world champ Sha’Carri Richardson was arrested last weekend for allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, fellow sprinter Christian Coleman, in a domestic violence incident at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport.
EUGENE, Ore. (TDR) — Sha’Carri Richardson, the reigning world champion in the women’s 100 meters, was arrested last weekend in Washington state after allegedly assaulting her boyfriend, Olympic sprinter Christian Coleman, during a heated altercation caught on surveillance video.
The 25-year-old track star was booked Sunday evening into the South Correctional Entity (SCORE) in Des Moines, Washington, on a fourth-degree domestic violence offense, according to police records reviewed by the Associated Press. She was released on Monday afternoon.

Just four days later, Richardson competed in the opening round of the U.S. Track and Field Championships in Eugene, Oregon, where she holds an automatic bye to the 2025 World Championships in Tokyo as the defending 100m champion.
Airport altercation caught on video
According to a police report, a TSA supervisor at Seattle-Tacoma International Airport alerted officers to a disturbance between Richardson and Coleman. Surveillance footage reportedly showed Richardson grabbing Coleman’s backpack, yanking it, and then physically impeding his movement.
“Coleman was shoved into a wall,” the officer wrote.
“Richardson appeared to throw an item—possibly headphones—at Coleman,” the report continued.
Coleman, who won the 100m gold at the 2019 World Championships, reportedly declined to press charges and refused further participation in the investigation.
“I was told Coleman did not want to participate any further in the investigation and declined to be a victim,” the report stated.

Fallout and fan reaction
USA Track and Field (USATF) acknowledged the incident but said in a statement,
“USATF is aware of the reports and is not commenting on this matter.”
Richardson’s agent has not returned media inquiries.
Fans are torn. Some took to social media to defend Richardson, citing her history of mental health struggles and public scrutiny. Others questioned the optics of her continuing to compete during an unresolved legal case.
Athletic legacy in limbo?
Richardson’s career has been a whirlwind of triumphs and controversy—from her gold in the 100m at the 2023 World Championships in Budapest, to her Olympic gold in the 4x100m relay, to her suspension for marijuana in 2021 that cost her a spot at the Tokyo Games.
Will this latest incident derail her shot at defending her title in Tokyo later this year?
