LOUISVILLE, KY (TDR) — Rahaman Ali, the devoted younger brother of boxing icon Muhammad Ali and a professional boxer in his own right, died Friday at the age of 82. His passing was confirmed by the Muhammad Ali Center in a statement posted to Facebook on Saturday. No cause of death has been released.

A Fighter in His Own Right

Born Rudolph Valentino Clay on July 18, 1943, Rahaman followed in Muhammad’s footsteps into the boxing ring. Between 1964 and 1972, he fought in 18 professional bouts, winning 14 of them. Though he never achieved the same global fame as his brother, Rahaman’s contribution to boxing earned respect from peers and fans alike.

A Life Devoted to Muhammad

After retiring from his own career, Rahaman devoted his life to supporting Muhammad. He traveled the world with his brother, helping him train and offering emotional support during Muhammad’s most challenging professional and personal moments. DeVone Holt, president and CEO of the Muhammad Ali Center, praised the bond between the two:

“He was one of the most constant sources of support for Muhammad during his career… a true example of what it means to be ‘my brother’s keeper.’”

The Author and the Undercard

Rahaman later turned to writing to preserve the history he witnessed firsthand. In 2014, he published That’s Muhammad Ali’s Brother! My Life on the Undercard, co-authored with H. Ron Brashear. He followed it with the 2019 release My Brother, Muhammad Ali – The Definitive Biography, offering an intimate look into their family life and Muhammad’s journey through boxing and beyond.

A Family’s Tribute

On social media, Muhammad’s daughters remembered Rahaman with tenderness. Hana Ali wrote on Facebook:

“Uncle Rock had a heart of gold. He never needed a spotlight to shine… from above, he and Daddy are part of something bigger… something meant to help heal this broken world.”

Laila Ali echoed those sentiments on Instagram:

“My father loved his brother Rahaman so deeply. They are now back in the arms of their beloved parents.”

A Legacy of Brotherhood

Rahaman’s passing marks the end of an era. As the last surviving member of Muhammad Ali’s immediate family, he carried forward the family’s history and spirit. Muhammad died in 2016 after a 32-year battle with Parkinson’s disease, but together, the brothers left behind a legacy of loyalty, grit, and grace.
