BEDMINSTER, NJ (TDR) — Fighter jets were scrambled Sunday after a civilian plane entered the restricted airspace over President Donald Trump’s property in Bedminster, New Jersey, the North American Aerospace Defense Command (NORAD) confirmed. This incident was one of seven aircraft violations reported over the weekend, including three on Saturday and four on Sunday.

According to a NORAD statement, flares were deployed to gain the pilot’s attention, and the plane was safely escorted out of the restricted zone by military aircraft. NORAD emphasized that the flares “burn out quickly and completely” and pose no danger to the public or people on the ground.

“The flares — which may have been visible to the public — are employed with the highest regard for the safety of the intercepted aircraft and people on the ground,” NORAD said in a separate release.

President Donald Trump was reportedly at his Bedminster property Sunday and scheduled to return to the White House later that evening. The incident highlights the importance of respecting Temporary Flight Restriction (TFR) zones, which NORAD and the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regularly establish around the president’s residences, including Mar-a-Lago in Florida.

Earlier this year, Air Force fighter jets also intercepted civilian aircraft violating the restricted airspace over President Trump’s Mar-a-Lago estate. NORAD reminded pilots to closely monitor Notices to Airmen (NOTAMs) issued by the FAA, emphasizing that “ignorance is not a defense” against violating restricted zones.

NORAD previously reported 11 airspace violations during the Fourth of July weekend in this same restricted zone, demonstrating ongoing challenges enforcing presidential airspace security.

The interceptions underscore the high priority placed on protecting the president and sensitive locations from unauthorized aircraft incursions, deploying rapid response fighter jets as necessary to maintain security and safety.
