This alleged assassination attempt is believed to be in retaliation for the U.S.-ordered killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, a key figure in the Revolutionary Guard, in Baghdad in 2020.

According to USA Today, U.S. officials have uncovered that between October 2021 and April 2022, Poursafi attempted to recruit criminals within the United States to carry out Bolton’s murder either in Washington, D.C., or Maryland. As a result of these threats, Bolton is now under constant protection.

Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed the seriousness with which the administration views these threats.

Poursafi remains at large outside the United States and was formally charged in August 2022. Iranian officials have consistently denied allegations of plotting assassinations against U.S. leaders.
