The Biden administration has announced a $20 million reward for information leading to the capture and conviction of Shahram Poursafi, identified as a member of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps.
Poursafi is accused of orchestrating a plot to assassinate John Bolton, a former U.S. national security adviser known for his tenure under President Donald Trump. This alleged assassination attempt is believed to be in retaliation for the U.S.-ordered killing of Gen. Qasem Soleimani, a key figure in the Revolutionary Guard, in Baghdad in 2020.
According to USA Today, U.S. officials have uncovered that between October 2021 and April 2022, Poursafi attempted to recruit criminals within the United States to carry out Bolton’s murder either in Washington, D.C., or Maryland. As a result of these threats, Bolton is now under constant protection.

The plot against Bolton comes amidst broader concerns over Iran’s intentions toward American officials. NBC News reported that former President Trump was briefed on an Iranian scheme aimed at him, highlighting an ongoing vigilance against threats from Iran targeting high-profile figures from both past and current administrations. Secretary of State Antony Blinken has confirmed the seriousness with which the administration views these threats.
Poursafi remains at large outside the United States and was formally charged in August 2022. The significant reward offered for his arrest underscores the gravity with which U.S. authorities view this case; analyst Matthew Levitt remarked on the notable size of the bounty as indicative of its critical importance.
Iranian officials have consistently denied allegations of plotting assassinations against U.S. leaders. In a statement to NBC, Vice President Mohammad Javad Zarif refuted such claims by emphasizing Iran’s stance against assassination while also pointing out the U.S.’s role in eliminating Gen. Soleimani, who he described as “a revered Iranian general.”
What are your thoughts on the Biden administration’s $20 million reward for information on Shahram Poursafi and the broader implications of alleged Iranian plots against U.S. officials?
