WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — The defense team for Ghislaine Maxwell is opposing efforts to unseal grand jury transcripts from her trial, warning that doing so could jeopardize her upcoming appeal to the Supreme Court.

“Jeffrey Epstein is dead. Ghislaine Maxwell is not,” her attorney wrote on Tuesday. “Whatever interest the public may have in Epstein, that interest cannot justify a broad intrusion into grand jury secrecy in a case where the defendant is alive, her legal options are viable, and her due process rights remain.”

DOJ Moves to Unseal Transcripts Amid Epstein Document Calls

The Department of Justice previously petitioned to unseal the grand jury testimony, as pressure mounts for President Donald J. Trump to release additional documents related to Jeffrey Epstein, the convicted child predator who died by apparent suicide in 2019 while facing sex trafficking charges.

Two judges are currently weighing the DOJ’s request, with Tuesday marking the deadline for Maxwell’s lawyers to file their response.

Maxwell’s Defense Claims She’s a Scapegoat

Attorneys David O. Markus and Melissa Madrigal argued in their filing that Maxwell has unfairly become the government’s scapegoat.

“She became the scapegoat and the only person the government could put on trial,” they wrote.

Maxwell, once Epstein’s close associate and girlfriend, is serving a 20-year sentence for sex trafficking. The DOJ maintains she conspired with Epstein to abuse underage women over several years.

In the wake of public backlash over Epstein and a DOJ memo denying the existence of a high-profile client list, Maxwell has reportedly met multiple times with Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche. She was recently transferred to a minimum security prison in Texas.

President Trump has left the possibility of a pardon open but indicated he has not seriously considered granting one.

Will the Supreme Court appeal and transparency debates surrounding Maxwell and Epstein reshape the ongoing saga?
