ARCADIA, Fla. (TDR) — A political argument over Donald Trump turned deadly in DeSoto County, where 38-year-old Donald Henry was found guilty of fatally stabbing his longtime friend Shawn Popp during a late-night dispute in 2022. A Florida jury convicted Henry this week of second-degree murder and tampering with evidence, according to the DeSoto County Sheriff’s Office.
The Fatal Confrontation
The altercation unfolded on October 22, 2022, at a residence on SW Shores Avenue in Arcadia. Witnesses testified that a group of individuals were smoking marijuana when Henry and Popp began arguing about Trump while Henry sharpened a knife. The dispute escalated, leading one bystander to suggest the men “take it outside.”
Instead, the confrontation turned violent. Henry shoved Popp into a sliding glass door before plunging the knife into his friend’s chest. According to the affidavit, Popp exclaimed: “You stabbed me in the chest, you son of a b—-.” He stumbled outside, crossed the street, and collapsed, dying at the scene.

Following his arrest, Henry claimed he acted in self-defense, alleging that Popp struck him during a heated exchange over “Trump filing for bankruptcy.” Henry told deputies his “training” kicked in, describing how he delivered a single fatal strike because he had been “taught to stop the threat, like police officers are.”
Authorities, however, noted no defensive wounds on Henry. Investigators determined that his actions did not reflect a need for self-protection but an unprovoked attack.
Conviction and Sentencing
Henry was immediately taken into custody after the stabbing and has remained jailed since 2022. He now awaits sentencing at the DeSoto County Jail, where his hearing is scheduled for October. He faces the prospect of life in prison.
The case underscores how political tensions, already dividing communities, can escalate into shocking violence even among friends.
