• Newsmax has agreed to pay $67 million to Dominion Voting Systems in a defamation settlement over 2020 election claims.
  • Payments will be spread over three years, starting with a $27 million installment this month.
  • The deal echoes Dominion’s earlier $787.5 million settlement with Fox News in 2023.

WILMINGTON, Del. (TDR) — Conservative outlet Newsmax will pay Dominion Voting Systems $67 million to resolve a defamation lawsuit tied to its coverage of the 2020 presidential election. The settlement, filed in Delaware, reflects a continuing legal saga that has reshaped the relationship between media and politics in the post-2020 environment.

According to the filing, the agreement stipulates three payments: $27 million due August 15, 2025; $20 million by January 15, 2026; and $20 million by January 15, 2027. The court documents did not include additional stipulations beyond the financial arrangement.

Newsmax’s Defiant Response

Following the disclosure, Newsmax issued a statement defending its editorial standards. “Newsmax believed it was critically important for the American people to hear both sides of the election disputes that arose in 2020. We stand by our coverage as fair, balanced, and conducted within professional standards of journalism.”

Despite its defiance, the company acknowledged its decision to settle stemmed from concern that Judge Eric Davis, presiding over the case, would not permit traditional libel defenses before a jury. Davis also oversaw the Fox News vs. Dominion case in 2023, where Fox paid $787.5 million to settle similar allegations.

Dominion’s Expanding Legal Impact

The Fox agreement, described by Dominion CEO John Poulos as underscoring the “consequences of spreading lies,” established a precedent for media liability in election coverage. The latest deal with Newsmax reinforces that trajectory and shows Dominion’s aggressive litigation strategy remains a powerful force in American media.

Observers note that Dominion’s settlements have added fuel to debates over media accountability, defamation law, and the future of election integrity.

Trump’s Renewed Attacks on Voting Machines

Meanwhile, President Donald Trump has continued to insist that the 2020 election was stolen, despite more than 60 court cases and state audits rejecting claims of widespread fraud. On Truth Social, Trump vowed to eliminate electronic voting machines, calling them “Highly Inaccurate” and advocating for a return to paper ballots.

“I am going to lead a movement to get rid of MAIL-IN BALLOTS, and also, while we’re at it, Highly ‘Inaccurate,’ Very Expensive, and Seriously Controversial VOTING MACHINES… which leave NO DOUBT at the end of the evening as to who WON, and who LOST, the Election,” Trump declared.

The statement highlights how disputes over voting technology remain a centerpiece of his political platform.

Does Dominion’s latest victory mark a turning point for media liability, or simply another chapter in America’s unresolved battle over election legitimacy?
