• President Donald Trump declared on Truth Social that D.C. has gone from “least safe” to “most safe.”
  • The claim follows his deployment of the National Guard and federal takeover of the D.C. police force.
  • Critics argue there is no evidence backing Trump’s assertion, while supporters cite alleged crime data manipulation.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR)President Donald Trump declared on Truth Social Monday that the nation’s capital has shifted in days from one of the most dangerous to the safest city in the world. His remarks follow a dramatic federal intervention into local policing that has stirred both praise and skepticism.

“D.C. gave Fake Crime numbers in order to create a false illusion of safety. This is a very bad and dangerous thing to do, and they are under serious investigation for so doing! Until 4 days ago, Washington, D.C., was the most unsafe ‘city’ in the United States, and perhaps the World. Now, in just a short period of time, it is perhaps the safest, and getting better every single hour!”

Trump followed up by adding:

“People are flocking to D.C. again, and soon, the beautification will begin!”

The comments come after Trump announced his decision to deploy National Guard troops into the District and seize control of the Metropolitan Police Department. The measures, justified as a response to what the administration calls “chronic failures in crime enforcement,” represent the boldest assertion of federal authority over the District since the passage of the Home Rule Act.

Supporters Cite Manipulated Data

Trump’s allies argue his crackdown was necessary given long-standing concerns that crime statistics were being misreported. A union representing D.C. officers has claimed data were deliberately adjusted to understate violent incidents. Reports have pointed to an investigation involving a police commander accused of directing statistical manipulation.

Supporters of Trump insist that the presence of federal troops has already improved security, with visible patrols in high-crime neighborhoods. Some even predict a revival of urban revitalization efforts long stalled by safety concerns.

Skeptics Point to Lack of Proof

Critics counter that Trump’s sweeping claims lack substantiation. Official reports show crime in Washington has declined steadily for two years, though high-profile incidents kept public concerns alive. Experts warn that assertions of D.C. becoming “the safest city in the world” are politically charged and unsupported by international crime data.

It remains unclear what evidence Trump is citing to support his declaration that the city went from “most unsafe” to “most safe” in a matter of days. His remarks underscore a broader struggle over law enforcement autonomy and the limits of federal authority in the capital.

Will Trump’s federal crackdown produce real safety gains for Washington, or merely deepen partisan battles over control of the nation’s capital?
