- The D.C. Police Union reported an 8% overall crime drop following President Trump’s federal takeover of D.C. policing.
- Carjackings and robberies showed the sharpest declines, while violent and property crime rates also fell.
- The union argues federal help is temporary and calls for repeal of D.C.’s 2022 policing reform law.
WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — The D.C. Police Union released new crime statistics on Monday, highlighting an 8% drop in overall crime in the nation’s capital just one week after President Donald Trump announced a federal takeover of the Metropolitan Police Department.
According to the union, which represents roughly 3,000 MPD personnel, carjackings fell by 83% since federal oversight began, robberies dropped by 46%, and violent crime overall was down 22%. Car theft declined 21%, while both assault with a deadly weapon and property crime each decreased by 6%.
In a post on X, the union credited outside assistance but cautioned against overstating its permanence:

“While federal assistance gives us a boost, we must repeal the misguided Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Act in order to make these changes permanent.”
A Closer Look at the 2022 Reform Law
The Comprehensive Policing and Justice Reform Amendment Act of 2022 was passed by the D.C. city council in December of that year. After Congress voted down the measure in early 2023, then-President Joe Biden vetoed the repeal, allowing the legislation to take effect in April 2023.
The law placed restrictions on use of force, created new hiring and firing standards, and expanded access to disciplinary records.
Union officials have long argued the measure weakened the force. In a 2023 statement, the group denounced the law as:

“Inarguably the worst piece of public safety legislation the D.C. Council has ever passed.”
Impact on the Force
According to USA Today, at least 21 MPD officers have been removed from duty or denied contract renewals due to provisions in the reform law. Twelve were dismissed outright, while nine more saw contracts expire without renewal.
The union contends the law disqualified veteran officers for decades-old discipline issues, arguing the policy strips the department of needed experience.
“The bill prohibits the hiring of sworn personnel if they have ever received sustained discipline from any law enforcement agency … meaning that these officers, who have spent their careers serving and protecting this city, are ineligible to be retained by the MPD,” the union stated.
Is the federal takeover the solution to D.C.’s long-term crime woes, or just a temporary patch?
