• President Trump reassured supporters that the U.S. will not send troops into Ukraine despite new security talks.
  • Allies warn Trump against drifting into “forever war” territory as Kyiv pushes for Article 5–like guarantees.
  • Zelensky seeks $90 billion in U.S. weapons while Trump eyes diplomacy with Putin and European leaders.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR)President Donald Trump is facing mounting pressure from his own allies not to entangle the United States militarily in Ukraine after he signaled openness to exploring security guarantees for the embattled nation in its war with Russia. Though the White House has insisted no U.S. troops will be deployed, Trump floated the possibility of providing air support using American pilots and warplanes.

Ukraine Meeting Sparks Alarm

The comments followed a high-stakes summit Monday with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky and seven European leaders at the White House. While discussions centered on potential security guarantees for Kyiv as an alternative to NATO membership, a red line for Russian President Vladimir Putin, Trump’s vague answer to a reporter’s question — that the U.S. would “help them out” — sparked alarm among his America First base.

Special envoy Steve Witkoff also raised eyebrows by suggesting Washington could participate in “Article 5–like protections” for Ukraine. That phrase, meant to evoke NATO’s collective defense clause, sent shockwaves through the MAGA coalition.

Trump Allies Push Back

Some of Trump’s strongest supporters immediately pushed back. Sen. Tommy Tuberville (R-Ala.) warned against another quagmire.

“We don’t want another war,” Tuberville said, pointing to the two decades of conflict in the Middle East. “It would be an impossible sell. The American people aren’t going to go for it.”

Tuberville, now campaigning for governor, stressed that voters in Alabama would reject U.S. entanglement, insisting European nations must bear responsibility for Ukraine’s defense.

Trump Seeks to Reassure

Appearing on Fox & Friends Tuesday, Trump tried to calm fears:

“Well, you have my assurance, and I’m president,” he said.

Instead, he hinted that France, Germany, and the U.K. might consider a greater role. Zelensky, meanwhile, emphasized Ukraine’s willingness to buy $90 billion in U.S. weapons as part of a security pact, while the U.S. would purchase Ukrainian drones.

Bannon Warns of “Tripwires”

Conservative firebrand Steve Bannon blasted the idea on his radio show, arguing hawks in Europe and Washington were trying to draw America deeper into the conflict.

“These are tripwires,” Bannon said. “This is where things go from regional conflicts to world wars.”

Similarly, right-wing activist Jack Posobiec pressed White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt, who defended the administration’s approach.

“The president understands the security guarantees are crucial to ensuring lasting peace,” Leavitt said, noting that Trump directed his team to work with allies and continue dialogue with Kyiv and Moscow.

Russia Pushes Back

Predictably, Moscow rejected the proposals outright. Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova warned that any NATO involvement risked “uncontrollable escalation.”

Despite the warnings, Trump is determined to keep up momentum, signaling he may seek direct talks with Putin and Zelensky. Secretary of State Marco Rubio will lead a U.S.-European-Ukrainian commission tasked with drafting potential terms for a final accord.

The delicate balancing act underscores Trump’s effort to maintain his MAGA base while projecting leadership abroad. Whether he can square those competing priorities may shape not only Ukraine’s future but also the trajectory of the 2026 midterms.

Will Trump’s instinct for dealmaking outweigh MAGA’s instinct to avoid war?
