- A Texas couple prepares to welcome a daughter who will end a century-long family streak of sons.
- The Sherman family has not seen a girl born into their line since Orah Belle Sherman in 1917.
- The expected March 2026 arrival has brought excitement, history, and pride to Montgomery County.
MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Texas (TDR) — In an era where family traditions often bend but rarely break, the Sherman household is preparing for a moment that feels almost biblical in its weight. Michael Sherman, a Montgomery County firefighter, and his wife Joacquia Sherman are expecting a baby girl — the first female born into Michael’s family since 1917.
A Break in History
For more than a century, the Sherman name has passed only through sons. Every generation — Michael’s father, grandfather, and uncles — welcomed boys. That cycle seemed unshakable until a September gender reveal, where a single slice of cake changed everything. The inside frosting revealed a burst of pink, confirming what no Sherman in living memory has seen: the birth of a daughter.
The last girl in the family was Orah Belle Sherman, born in 1917. She lived until 2004, remembered as a strong-willed woman with ties to Atlanta’s civil rights movement. Now, her legacy gains a successor after 108 long years.
Family Celebration
What began as a small gathering expanded into a national story. Relatives flew in from across the country, eager to witness what one family member called “a miracle in pink.” Michael, blindfolded for suspense, recalled the moment vividly:

“It was a huge surprise on top of me finding out that it’s a girl. So, it was pretty amazing.”
His wife Joacquia admitted she didn’t believe it was possible. “We thought the Sherman streak was too strong to break. But God had other plans.”
A Daughter’s Arrival
The couple’s five-year-old son, Mekhai, has already embraced his role as big brother, telling neighbors and school friends that “the family finally got a girl.” The baby is due in March 2026, and preparations are underway — from decorating her nursery to pulling family heirlooms out of storage.
The Shermans are keenly aware of the historic weight of this moment. Michael said, “We are the ones bringing the baby girl into the world. Finally, after over 100 years. It’s amazing.”
The Larger Meaning
This story has resonated far beyond Montgomery County. At a time when America wrestles with questions of tradition and change, the Sherman daughter represents both. She is continuity and disruption, heritage and hope, a reminder that history is never fully written.
Will the arrival of one little girl reset how a family — and perhaps a community — defines its legacy?
