• Tyler Robinson, 22, was arrested for the assassination of conservative activist Charlie Kirk after a days-long manhunt.
  • His grandmother insists the family are loyal Trump supporters, despite speculation about political motives behind the killing.
  • Utah officials revealed Discord messages and family testimony pointing to Robinson as the prime suspect in the shooting.

OREM, Utah (TDR) — The arrest of Tyler Robinson, a 22-year-old Utah man accused of assassinating conservative activist Charlie Kirk, has stunned both investigators and his family. Robinson’s grandmother, Debbie Robinson, 69, insisted to the Daily Mail that the family are staunch supporters of President Donald Trump, undercutting MAGA figureheads who were quick to blame the political left for Kirk’s killing.

A Family’s Shock

Robinson’s father, Matt Robinson, 48, reportedly turned his son in after Tyler confessed to the crime, according to the Daily Mail interview. Debbie said she has not been able to reach her son since the arrest went public. “I’m just so confused,” she admitted. “He is the shyest person. He has never, ever spoke politics to me at all.” She further insisted that her grandson “has never, ever gotten in trouble in his life.”

Public records reviewed by The Daily Beast and other outlets confirm the Robinson family’s Republican ties. His mother, Amber Robinson, 44, is a licensed social worker, while Matt operates a small business installing countertops and stone surfaces in Washington, Utah. Both parents are registered Republicans and licensed hunters. A Facebook post by Amber described one of Tyler’s brothers as a “gun toting, cowboy loving, brilliant kid.”

Discord Evidence Emerges

Utah Governor Spencer Cox revealed that Robinson’s roommate had provided authorities with incriminating Discord messages. The messages reportedly contained details about bullet engravings and a rifle hidden in a remote location. Cox said Robinson had expressed political frustration in recent years and specifically voiced dislike for Kirk, even mentioning the activist’s scheduled appearance at Utah Valley University.

Discord issued its own statement distancing the platform from the planning of the attack. “These were communications between the suspect’s roommate and a friend after the shooting, where the roommate was recounting the contents of a note the suspect had left elsewhere,” said Jud Hoffman, vice president of trust and safety. The company emphasized that Robinson did not organize or promote violence through its service.

Trump Calls for Harsh Punishment

On Friday morning, President Trump announced that a suspect was in custody, bringing an end to a tense manhunt that had followed Kirk’s killing during a speaking event. Two earlier suspects had been detained and released before Robinson’s arrest. Speaking to Fox, Trump declared, “I hope that he was going to be found guilty, I would imagine, and I hope he gets the death penalty.”

Prosecutors are expected to file charges next week. The case continues to raise questions about political violence, family ties, and the personal unraveling of a young man described by relatives as quiet and apolitical.
