REEDLEY, Calif. (TDR) — A divorce filing has ended in tragedy after a Central California mother of two was killed by her estranged husband, who then died in a shoot-out with police. The murder-suicide has left an entire family devastated and underscored the dangers that can accompany domestic disputes.
The Deadly Attack
Authorities say Michael Rocha, 43, shot and killed his wife, Yesennia Rocha, on September 6, 2025. The incident happened outside a family gathering in Reedley, where Yesennia was sitting in a car. According to Reedley Police Chief Mark Ediger, Rocha walked up and fired multiple rounds into the vehicle.
“She was struck multiple times,” Ediger told KSEE. Yesennia was pronounced dead at the scene. Family members, including the couple’s 20-year-old son and 23-year-old daughter, were present during the attack.
The Manhunt and Shoot-Out
After the killing, Rocha fled. Relatives followed alongside police but were unable to stop him. The next morning, around 10 a.m. on September 7, deputies located Rocha in Tulare County. According to the Fresno Bee, Rocha led officers on a pursuit, firing a rifle out of his truck window at deputies.

“He got into a gun battle, and he pretty much got what he deserved,” Tulare County Sheriff Mike Boudreaux told reporters. “Shots were fired out the window at pursuing deputies,” he explained, noting that no officers were injured.
When Rocha finally stopped his truck, he continued firing multiple rounds before deputies returned fire, killing him. Another weapon was later recovered inside his vehicle.
Divorce and Domestic Strain
Police confirmed that Yesennia had filed for divorce in August, ending 25 years of marriage. The couple had been separated in the weeks leading up to the attack.
“This couple had a 20-year-old son, 23-year-old daughter who are without both of their parents within a matter of 24 hours. Just tragic, very horrific,” Chief Ediger said.
Rocha’s mother, Rita, later told KFSN that her son “couldn’t cope” with the separation. Through tears, she said, “He didn’t want to live without his sweetheart. He didn’t want to live without his soulmate, the love of his life and he didn’t want her to live without him, so he chose the cowardly way out.”
Family in Mourning
In the aftermath, the Rocha children are left grieving. “She was the light of our world,” daughter Kayla told KFSN about her mother. “She shined very bright. She was always there for me and my brother; she was everything to us.”

Her brother Jacob echoed the heartbreak: “I just wish I could see her one more time, hold her one more time, tell her I love her, give her a hug, but that man took everything away from us,” he said, referring to his father.
The family’s pain extends across generations. Rita Rocha, Michael’s mother, expressed sorrow for both sides: “My son was the world to me, and their mom was the world to them and now both families are destroyed.”
A Community Responds
Loved ones have since launched a GoFundMe campaign to cover funeral expenses. The fundraiser describes Yesennia as “deeply loved by family, friends, and everyone who had the blessing of knowing her,” adding that her absence leaves a hole that “can never truly be filled.”
The Reedley Police Department continues investigating, though officials say the motive appears tied to the divorce filing and Rocha’s inability to accept the separation.
