- The move followed tensions over a planned immigration raid in California’s capital.
SACRAMENTO, CA (TDR) — Former President Donald Trump fired the top federal prosecutor in Sacramento just hours after she cautioned immigration agents they could not indiscriminately detain people in her district, according to internal documents reviewed by The New York Times.
Michele Beckwith, who had served as acting U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of California since January, was notified of her dismissal by email at 4:31 p.m. on July 15. The order, issued directly from the White House, removed her from her post effective immediately.
The termination followed a tense exchange the previous day between Beckwith and Gregory Bovino, head of the Border Patrol’s El Centro sector, roughly 600 miles south of Sacramento. Bovino called Beckwith to discuss a planned immigration raid in California’s capital and asked who in her office agents should contact if they were assaulted during operations, the Times reported, citing Beckwith’s account.
Warning to Immigration Agents
Beckwith told Bovino his officers could not indiscriminately detain people in her jurisdiction, emphasizing the limits of federal authority when conducting raids. According to the Times, she made clear that sweeping detentions without proper cause could expose the agency to legal challenges.

Less than 24 hours later, Beckwith received word that the president had ordered her removal. “I was blindsided,” she later told colleagues, according to one person familiar with the matter.
Clash Over Immigration Policy
The firing highlights the friction between Trump’s immigration agenda and federal prosecutors tasked with upholding legal standards. Throughout his presidency, Trump pushed aggressively to expand deportations, often clashing with state officials in California, which positioned itself as a bulwark against federal crackdowns.
Sacramento, a city with large immigrant communities, has been a frequent flashpoint. Local leaders have repeatedly resisted federal raids, passing sanctuary policies designed to limit cooperation with immigration enforcement. Beckwith’s warning to Bovino underscored the legal sensitivities of carrying out such operations in a jurisdiction where courts have been wary of blanket enforcement tactics.
Swift Termination
The speed of Beckwith’s firing has raised eyebrows in legal circles. While presidents have broad authority to replace U.S. attorneys, the proximity between her warning and the termination suggests political motives.
“This appears to be direct retaliation against a prosecutor for doing her job,” said one former Justice Department official, who noted that U.S. attorneys are expected to maintain independence even when pressured by political leaders.
The White House and the Department of Justice declined to comment on the matter when contacted by reporters.
Fallout in California
Beckwith’s ouster leaves the Sacramento office in turmoil. The Eastern District of California covers a vast territory, including Sacramento, Fresno, and Yosemite National Park, and prosecutes major cases involving drugs, fraud, and public corruption.

For now, her deputies are expected to oversee operations until a permanent replacement is named. Critics warn the sudden shake-up could slow prosecutions and create uncertainty for ongoing investigations.
“This is a dangerous precedent,” said a California legal scholar. “When federal prosecutors are punished for enforcing the law impartially, it erodes trust in the entire system.”
Does Trump’s firing of a U.S. attorney show strength in enforcing his agenda, or weakness in silencing legal oversight?
