• Rep. Hakeem Jeffries condemned Trump's AI-generated video depicting him with mustache and sombrero as disgusting bigotry.
  • Trump posted the racist video hours after meeting with Jeffries and Chuck Schumer about government shutdown negotiations.
  • The video falsely portrayed Schumer advocating free healthcare for undocumented immigrants to gain Democratic votes amid budget crisis.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries delivered a scathing response Tuesday to President Donald Trump after the commander-in-chief posted an AI-generated video mocking Democratic leaders with racist imagery.

The AI-altered clip, shared Monday night on Trump's Truth Social and X accounts, depicted Jeffries wearing a sombrero and cartoonish mustache as mariachi music played. The video featured a fake voice of Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer making false claims about Democratic immigration policies.

Speaking to MSNBC, Jeffries did not hide his anger.

"It's a disgusting video and we're going to continue to make clear bigotry will get you nowhere. We are fighting to protect the health care of the American people in the face of an unprecedented Republican assault."

Appearing outside the Capitol Tuesday, Jeffries delivered an even more forceful rebuke:

"Mr. President, allow me to reintroduce myself. I'm the House Democratic leader. Our caucus is 217 members strong. We serve in a separate and co-equal branch of government. We don't work for you. We work for the American people. We are fighting to lower the high cost of living. And to protect the healthcare of everyday Americans. And Mr. President, the next time you have something to say about me, don't cop out through a racist and fake AI video. When I'm back in the Oval Office, say it to my face! Say it to my face!"

He continued: "House Democrats are here, on duty, fighting on behalf of the American people ready to fund the government in a way that lifts up their quality of life. House Democrats are on duty. House Republicans are on vacation. Shame on them for being on vacation all across the country and across the world on the eve of a government shutdown."

Jeffries went further, calling the Republican absence unconscionable and un-American: "We're on duty. They're on vacation. They're on vacation because they'd rather shut the government down than protect the healthcare of the American people. That's unfathomable. That's unacceptable. That's unconscionable and that's un-American. Do your job. As opposed to being missing in action."

The Video's Content

In the doctored footage, the fake Schumer voice argues for providing undocumented immigrants "free healthcare" because minority voters have abandoned Democrats and the party needs new voters. The AI-generated voice says, "Nobody likes Democrats anymore. We have no votes left because of all of our woke, trans bulls—."

The fabricated audio continues: "Not even Black people want to vote for us anymore, even Latinos hate us, so we need new voters." The video depicts the fake Schumer claiming Democrats are "just a bunch of woke pieces of s—."

Trump posted the video hours after meeting with Jeffries and Schumer at the White House to discuss the impending government shutdown. The meeting, which also included Senate Majority Leader John Thune and House Speaker Mike Johnson, ended without agreement.

Democratic Response

Jeffries fired back on social media shortly after Trump's post went live, writing, "Bigotry will get you nowhere. Cancel the Cuts. Lower the Cost. Save Healthcare. We are NOT backing down."

He later responded by posting a real photo of Trump with convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein, captioning it simply: "This is real."

Schumer also responded on X, stating, "If you think your shutdown is a joke, it just proves what we all know: You can't negotiate. You can only throw tantrums."

On MSNBC's "The Last Word," Jeffries told host Lawrence O'Donnell the video represents malignant distraction tactics.

"This is all designed to be a malignant distraction from people who are determined to continue to rip healthcare away from the American people."

Shutdown Stakes

The controversy unfolds as government funding is set to expire at midnight Tuesday. Democrats are demanding negotiations on Affordable Care Act subsidies that benefit more than 20 million Americans, while Republicans want a clean funding bill.

"More than 20 million Americans are on the brink of experiencing dramatically increased premiums, co-pays and deductibles because of the Republican refusal to extend the Affordable Care Act tax credits which benefit working class Americans," Jeffries said. "Working-class Americans, their health care, that's what we're fighting to preserve, to defend and to strengthen."

The ACA subsidies don't expire until the end of the year, but Democrats want the extension included in any shutdown-averting deal.

Republican Defense

Republican Senator Roger Marshall attempted to defend Trump's video on CNN, comparing the president to a "playful little boy."

When anchor Kaitlan Collins asked why Trump couldn't simply say Democratic demands are ridiculous without posting offensive content, Marshall struggled to provide a substantive answer.

Pattern of Controversy

The video represents Trump's latest use of AI-generated content to mock political opponents. Critics note the timing — posting divisive, racially charged material during critical budget negotiations — undermines his stated desire to work with Democrats.

The fake video also promotes the "great replacement" conspiracy theory, which falsely claims Democrats import undocumented immigrants to replace white voters. The theory has been cited by perpetrators of multiple mass shootings.

Democratic Party Chair Jaime Harrison wrote on X: "Ladies and gentlemen… the President of the United States. Disgraceful. Let's see how the spineless Republicans twist themselves into knots defending this bigoted nonsense."

As the shutdown deadline approaches, Trump's video appears to have further poisoned negotiations that were already struggling to find common ground on healthcare funding.
