• President labels GOP lawmakers backing Epstein file disclosure as “soft and foolish” politicians falling into Democratic trap
  • Trump insists convicted sex offender Jeffrey Epstein is “Democrat’s problem, not the Republican’s problem” despite his past friendship
  • Marjorie Taylor Greene calls Trump’s opposition “huge miscalculation” while defending president from wrongdoing allegations in exclusive CBS interview

WASHINGTON (TDR) — President Donald Trump unleashed a scathing attack Friday on fellow Republicans supporting efforts to release additional Jeffrey Epstein files, calling them “soft and foolish” politicians who have fallen into Democrats’ clutches. The rebuke came as bipartisan momentum builds for a House vote next week on legislation compelling the Justice Department to disclose materials from its investigation into the convicted sex offender.

Trump frames Epstein as Democratic deflection

“The Democrats are doing everything in their withering power to push the Epstein Hoax again, despite the DOJ releasing 50,000 pages of documents, in order to deflect from all of their bad policies and losses, especially the SHUTDOWN EMBARRASSMENT, where their party is in total disarray,” Trump wrote on Truth Social. “Some Weak Republicans have fallen into their clutches because they are soft and foolish.”

The president declared that “Epstein was a Democrat, and he is the Democrat’s problem, not the Republican’s problem!” He urged critics to focus on Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, and Larry Summers instead, stating: “Ask Bill Clinton, Reid Hoffman, and Larry Sommers about Epstein, they know all about him, don’t waste your time with Trump. I have a Country to run!”

Thousands of new documents related to Epstein were released this week, including correspondence where Epstein mentioned Trump by name and described the president as “dirty,” “borderline insane” and claimed “I know how dirty Donald is.” The president was not accused of wrongdoing in the messages, though Epstein wrote that Trump “knew about the girls” and spent hours at his home with a trafficking victim.

Republican defections mount

Four House Republicans—Marjorie Taylor Greene of Georgia, Thomas Massie of Kentucky, Lauren Boebert of Colorado and Nancy Mace of South Carolina—signed a discharge petition alongside all Democrats to force a floor vote on the files release. The petition reached 218 signatures Wednesday after Rep. Adelita Grijalva of Arizona was sworn in, triggering an automatic vote despite GOP leadership’s opposition.

“I think it’s a huge miscalculation, and I truly just stand with the women, and I think they deserve to be the ones that we’re fighting for,” Greene told CBS Mornings in an exclusive interview Friday.

Greene emphasized she has spoken with many of Epstein’s victims and that Trump “has done nothing wrong.” She maintained her support for the files release despite the president’s anger, stating she doesn’t believe Trump has anything to hide.

House Speaker Mike Johnson, who had delayed the vote for weeks by keeping Congress out of session during the 43-day government shutdown, announced Wednesday he will schedule the vote for next week. Rep. Ro Khanna of California predicted “dozens more Republicans” will vote for disclosure than the four who signed the petition.

Trump directs DOJ to investigate Democrats

In a separate Truth Social post, Trump announced he will ask Attorney General Pam Bondi and the FBI to investigate Epstein’s relationships with Clinton, Summers, Hoffman, J.P. Morgan Chase, and others to “determine what was going on with them.”

“This is another Russia, Russia, Russia Scam, with all arrows pointing to the Democrats,” Trump wrote. “Records show that these men, and many others, spent large portions of their life with Epstein, and on his ‘Island.’ Stay tuned!!!”

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt accused Democrats of “selectively leaked emails” to create a false narrative. Trump, a former friend of Epstein, has avoided answering reporters’ questions about the case since the latest documents were released.

If the House passes the bill, it would require Senate approval and Trump’s signature to become law. Senate Majority Leader John Thune has indicated limited Republican appetite for the measure in the upper chamber, presenting a significant obstacle even if the House votes in favor.

Should presidents criticize members of their own party who support transparency measures related to criminal investigations?
