• Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos named lead sponsors of May 2026 Met Gala
  • Announcement marks departure from traditional fashion house sponsorships
  • Anna Wintour defends couple amid social media criticism over billionaire involvement

NEW YORK, NY (TDR) — Jeff Bezos and Lauren Sánchez Bezos will serve as lead sponsors of the 2026 Met Gala, the Metropolitan Museum of Art announced this week, a decision that has generated immediate discussion across social media platforms about the role of billionaire philanthropy in cultural institutions.

The announcement, posted on the Met’s official Instagram account, revealed that the annual fundraising event will take place May 4, 2026, with the accompanying exhibition titled “Costume Art” opening to the public six days later. Saint Laurent and Condé Nast will serve as secondary sponsors.

A break from fashion house tradition

Major fashion houses have traditionally backed the event. Louis Vuitton sponsored the 2025 gala, which celebrated the “Superfine: Tailoring Black Style” exhibition with co-chairs including Pharrell Williams, Colman Domingo, and Lewis Hamilton. Previous sponsors have included TikTok in 2024 and Instagram in 2022.

Anna Wintour, who continues to oversee the Met Gala as Vogue’s global editorial director, defended the sponsorship in an interview with CNN at the Franca Fund Gala in Doha, Qatar. She described Sánchez Bezos as a “great lover of costume and obviously of fashion” and called her a “wonderful asset to the museum and the event.”

Social media response

Critics on social media have raised questions about billionaire involvement in cultural institutions traditionally supported by the fashion industry. Some users expressed concern that the sponsorship represents a shift toward wealthy individuals wielding influence over arts programming, while others suggested the funds could be directed toward alternative causes.

However, this is not the first time Bezos has been involved with the event. Amazon sponsored the 2012 Met Gala, during which he served as honorary chair. Other technology companies including Apple and Yahoo have also served as sponsors in previous years.

The couple has increased their presence in the fashion world throughout 2025. They attended Paris Fashion Week shows for Chanel and Balenciaga and appeared on Vogue’s digital cover in June ahead of their wedding in Venice. The Bezos Earth Fund also announced a $6.25 million partnership with the Council of Fashion Designers of America to support sustainable fashion innovation through grants and scholarships.

The 2026 exhibition will inaugurate the nearly 12,000-square-foot Condé M. Nast Galleries adjacent to the museum’s Great Hall, featuring approximately 200 artworks alongside 200 garments exploring the relationship between clothing and the human form. The Met Gala serves as the primary fundraiser for the Costume Institute, raising $31 million at the 2025 event.
