• President declares South Africa “not worthy” of membership in any global forum
  • Johannesburg summit boycott sparks unprecedented diplomatic standoff
  • Pretoria insists founding member status cannot be revoked unilaterally

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — President Donald Trump announced Wednesday that South Africa will not receive an invitation to the 2026 G20 summit in Miami, escalating a bitter diplomatic dispute between the two nations following the U.S. boycott of last weekend’s Johannesburg gathering.

Trump Bans South Africa Over Multiple Grievances

The announcement came via Truth Social, where Trump cited what he called “horrific human rights abuses” against white Afrikaners. He also claimed South Africa refused to transfer G20 hosting duties to a U.S. Embassy representative at the summit’s closing ceremony.

“South Africa has demonstrated to the World they are not a country worthy of Membership anywhere, and we are going to stop all payments and subsidies to them, effective immediately.”

The United States was the only G20 member without high-level representation at the Johannesburg summit. The gathering marked the first time the forum convened on African soil.

Ramaphosa Pushes Back Against Exclusion

South African President Cyril Ramaphosa called Trump’s decision “regrettable” and rejected the premise that South Africa requires an invitation to attend. His office clarified that G20 presidency instruments were handed to a U.S. Embassy official at the Department of International Relations headquarters after American officials boycotted the ceremony.

Ramaphosa emphasized that his country joined the G20 as a founding member in 1999. Membership changes require consensus from all participants, not unilateral decisions by the host nation.

Legal Questions Surround Trump’s Authority

Experts note the G20 operates as an informal grouping without formal mechanisms to expel members. Trump could potentially block South African officials by denying U.S. visas, effectively preventing their attendance at his Trump National Doral resort in December 2026.

South Africa’s head of public diplomacy, Clayson Monyela, warned that allowing the exclusion could threaten the forum’s existence. He noted other countries have signaled they may boycott the Miami summit in solidarity.

Poland Emerges as Potential Replacement

The Trump administration reportedly plans to invite Poland to participate at an elevated level. Polish President Karol Nawrocki received an invitation from Trump during a September White House visit. Poland recently crossed the trillion-dollar GDP threshold and ranks as the world’s twentieth-largest economy.

The dispute reflects deeper tensions between Washington and Pretoria over South Africa’s diplomatic ties with China, Russia, and Iran. Trade between the nations reached $26.2 billion in 2024.

Will other G20 members stand with South Africa or accept Trump’s unprecedented reshaping of the global economic forum?
