• President calls Minneapolis mayor “a fool” for expressing pride in city’s Somali community
  • Trump repeats debunked claim that congresswoman married her brother to commit immigration fraud
  • Omar responds that president’s “obsession with me is creepy” and calls for him to seek help

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — President Donald Trump called for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to be thrown out of the country and said she and other Somali immigrants should not be allowed to serve in Congress. The remarks came Wednesday as Trump escalated attacks on Minnesota’s Somali community for the second consecutive day.

President Dismisses Minneapolis Mayor

Trump was responding to a reporter’s question about his comments Tuesday calling Omar “garbage” and saying he did not want Somali immigrants in the United States. When told Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey (D) expressed pride in having the largest Somali community in the country, Trump dismissed him immediately.

“Well then, he’s a fool,” Trump said, cutting off the reporter. “I wouldn’t be proud to have the largest Somalian — look at their nation. Look how bad their nation is. It’s not even a nation. It’s just people walking around killing each other.”

The president then launched into a lengthy tirade claiming Somali immigrants have destroyed Minnesota and taken “billions and billions of dollars” from the country. He called the state “a hellhole right now” and blamed Gov. Tim Walz (D) for the situation.

Baseless Claims About Omar’s Marriage

Trump repeated the long-debunked rumor that Omar married her brother to commit immigration fraud, a claim that has circulated online since 2016 without substantive evidence.

“They have a representative, Ilhan Omar, who they say married her brother, that’s a fraud,” Trump said. “She shouldn’t be allowed to be a congresswoman, and I’m sure people are looking at that. And she should be thrown the hell out of our country.”

According to Snopes, the rumor first appeared on a Somali community forum and was amplified by conservative blogs. Multiple fact-checking organizations have found no verified evidence supporting the allegation. Omar vehemently denied the accusations in 2016, calling them “absolutely false and ridiculous” and providing a detailed statement about her family and marital history.

The Minnesota congresswoman responded to Trump’s attacks on social media, dismissing his fixation on her as disturbing.

“His obsession with me is creepy. I hope he gets the help he desperately needs,” Omar wrote on X.

In an interview with MSNBC, Omar noted Trump’s pattern of attacking Black immigrants, particularly those who are Muslim. “Most of us are citizens,” she said, adding that Somali immigrants chose Minnesota because it is “beautiful and very welcoming.”

Sen. Tina Smith (D-MN) condemned Trump’s rhetoric, stating simply: “This is what bigotry looks like. And it’s despicable.”

Context Behind Anti-Somali Rhetoric

Trump’s attacks intensified after conservative activist Christopher Rufo published allegations citing unnamed sources that money from Minnesota fraud schemes funded al-Shabab militants in Somalia. The claims remain unsubstantiated by law enforcement. While 59 people have been convicted in COVID relief fraud schemes in Minnesota, with many of East African descent, no evidence connects the crimes to terrorist organizations.

Omar became the first Somali American elected to Congress in 2018. Her family fled civil war in Somalia when she was a child, spending years in a Kenyan refugee camp before arriving in the United States at age 12. She became a naturalized citizen 25 years ago.

Trump has targeted Omar repeatedly throughout his political career, including a 2019 tweet telling her and three other progressive congresswomen of color to “go back” to their countries—despite three of the four being born in the United States.

Will Trump’s inflammatory rhetoric against Somali Americans translate into concrete policy actions targeting the community in Minnesota?
