ANN ARBOR, MI (TDR) — The University of Michigan plunged into chaos Wednesday as the school fired head football coach Sherrone Moore for cause, only to see the Michigan coach detained by police hours later on an unrelated assault allegation.

Moore, 39, spent two seasons leading the Wolverines after serving as offensive coordinator under Jim Harbaugh. His abrupt dismissal caps a turbulent tenure marked by a national championship appearance, a sign-stealing scandal, and now allegations of misconduct with a university employee.

University Ends Moore's Tenure

Athletic director Warde Manuel announced the termination Wednesday afternoon, citing policy violations uncovered during an internal investigation.

"Following a university investigation, credible evidence was found that Coach Moore engaged in an inappropriate relationship with a staff member. This conduct constitutes a clear violation of University policy, and U-M maintains zero tolerance for such behavior."

The firing for cause allows Michigan to avoid paying the nearly $12.3 million remaining on Moore's five-year contract. Moore earned approximately $6.1 million during the 2025 season.

Michigan Coach Detained by Police

The situation escalated dramatically Wednesday evening when the Michigan coach detained by Saline police was turned over to Pittsfield Township authorities for investigation into potential charges. Officers responded to a location on Ann Arbor Saline Road around 4:10 p.m. regarding an alleged assault.

Police confirmed the incident did not appear random in nature. Moore was booked into Washtenaw County Jail Wednesday night, though specific charges remained pending as authorities continued their investigation.

Poggi Steps In Again

The university named associate head coach Biff Poggi as interim leader, effective immediately. The 65-year-old previously filled the same role earlier this season while Moore served a two-game suspension stemming from the program's sign-stealing scandal.

Poggi will lead Michigan against Texas in the Cheez-It Citrus Bowl on December 31. The legendary high school coach won 13 state titles during his tenure at Gilman School in Maryland before transitioning to college football.

Moore's Brief Tenure Ends in Disgrace

Moore compiled a 17-8 record across two seasons, including a 9-3 campaign in 2025. The Wolverines carried a five-game winning streak into their regular season finale before falling 27-9 to Ohio State in what became the most-watched game of the season.

His path to the head coaching position came after serving on Michigan's staff since 2018, first as tight ends coach before rising to offensive coordinator. Moore assumed the top job when Harbaugh departed for the Los Angeles Chargers following the 2023 national championship.
