• Rob Reiner, 78, and wife Michele Singer Reiner, 68, found dead Sunday afternoon
  • Investigators believe couple suffered throat wounds in apparent homicide at Brentwood home
  • Family member being questioned by LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division, no arrests announced

LOS ANGELES, CA (TDR) — Hollywood director Rob Reiner and his wife Michele Singer Reiner were found dead Sunday afternoon inside their Brentwood mansion with apparent stab wounds, according to multiple law enforcement sources. The Los Angeles Fire Department responded to a medical aid call around 3:30 p.m. at the couple’s residence on South Chadbourne Avenue, discovering the bodies of the 78-year-old filmmaker and his 68-year-old wife. Investigators are now questioning a family member in connection with what the LAPD’s Robbery Homicide Division is treating as an apparent homicide.

Daughter Discovered Bodies After Possible Family Altercation

One of Reiner’s daughters reportedly discovered her parents’ bodies and immediately contacted authorities, telling police a family member had killed them and describing that person as “dangerous,” according to sources briefed on the investigation. TMZ reports the couple suffered throat wounds, possibly following an argument inside the home. The Los Angeles Times confirmed law enforcement sources indicated a family member close to the Reiners was being questioned, though LAPD Deputy Chief Alan Hamilton emphasized at a Sunday night press conference that no suspect has been identified.

“We are going to try to speak to every family member that we can to get to the facts of this investigation.”

Hamilton stated authorities were not seeking anyone as a suspect or person of interest until their investigation progressed further. The Robbery Homicide Division detectives canvassed the neighborhood but indicated they were not looking for anyone in the affluent Brentwood area, home to numerous celebrities.

Legendary Career Spanning Five Decades

Reiner’s storied career began in show business as a comedy writer in the 1960s, working as Steve Martin’s writing partner on the Smothers Brothers Comedy Hour. He catapulted to fame in the 1970s playing Michael Stivic—nicknamed “Meathead”—opposite Carroll O’Connor’s Archie Bunker in Norman Lear’s groundbreaking sitcom “All in the Family.” The role earned him two Primetime Emmy Awards for Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series.

His directorial work defined an era of American cinema. The 1984 rock mockumentary “This is Spinal Tap” marked his first major success behind the camera, followed by beloved classics including “Stand By Me,” “The Princess Bride,” “When Harry Met Sally,” “Misery,” “A Few Good Men,” and “The American President.” Reiner met Michele while directing “When Harry Met Sally” in 1989, and the couple married that same year.

California Governor Gavin Newsom called Reiner “the big-hearted genius behind so many of the classic stories we love,” noting his boundless empathy made his stories timeless. Los Angeles Mayor Karen Bass described it as “a devastating loss for our city and our country,” praising Reiner’s contributions to American culture through both his creative work and advocacy for social justice.

The estate of Norman Lear released a statement remembering their close relationship: “Norman often referred to Rob as a son. The world is unmistakably darker tonight.” Former President Barack Obama honored Reiner for giving audiences “some of our most cherished stories” told on screen.

The son of comedy legend Carl Reiner, Rob leaves behind three children with Michele—Jake, Nick, and Romy—along with adopted daughter Tracy Reiner from his previous marriage to actor-director Penny Marshall. The Brentwood neighborhood rarely experiences homicides; the scene sits approximately one mile from where Nicole Brown Simpson and Ron Goldman were killed in 1994.

Will this tragedy prompt renewed discussions about family violence prevention among Hollywood’s elite community?
