• Bailey quickly responded to negative weight comment during Friday livestream while assembling furniture
  • Singer has been open about struggling with body dysmorphia and weight fluctuation
  • Fans praised the artist for standing up to online harassment about her appearance

LOS ANGELES, CA (TDR) — Chloe Bailey delivered a swift and confident response to a troll who commented on her weight during an Instagram livestream Friday, reminding viewers she knows her “body tea” and refusing to tolerate body-shaming.

The 27-year-old singer was casually assembling furniture at home on January 2 when a commenter wrote that she was “getting big.” Bailey immediately addressed the remark for thousands of viewers watching the stream.

“No, I’m not. I’m actually losing weight. And even if I was getting big, and? What about it? Why you talking about my body? What does your body look like? Send me a picture, let me judge it.”

The Trouble In Paradise artist recognized the comment as an attempt at “rage baiting” designed to provoke a negative reaction.

“Yeah, they trying to rage bait me because I know my body tea. And I don’t even say that often, but the stress got my waist snatched.”

History of Body Image Struggles

Bailey has been transparent about dealing with body dysmorphia and the challenges of weight fluctuation throughout her career. During a 2023 appearance on rapper Latto‘s former Apple Music show 777 Radio, she discussed her complicated relationship with her body.

“I think sometimes I have body dysmorphia because there’ll be times I look and I’ll feel way bigger than I was. And I look back at pictures, I’m like, Chloe, you were snatched. Even right now, I gained a couple pounds and I’m like, It looks good on me, instead of beating myself up about it, because I will.”

The singer told Taraji P. Henson in a 2021 interview that she developed curves at a young age, getting stretch marks by age 12. As her visibility increased, Bailey faced online harassment and accusations of “trying to sell sex” because of her body type.

“And at first I was really getting sad about it. But then I thought — why would I let that control my thoughts and feelings when I know it’s a lie? So I kind of had to give it not so much power. I’m not doing anything crazy; I’m just loving and appreciating my body, and I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that.”

Career and Recent Work

Bailey rose to prominence alongside her sister Halle Bailey as the duo Chloe x Halle. The pair released their critically acclaimed album Ungodly Hour in 2020, earning multiple Grammy nominations.

Since launching her solo career, Bailey has released two studio albums. Her debut album In Pieces arrived in March 2023, featuring collaborations with Chris Brown, Missy Elliott and Future. The project debuted at number 17 on Billboard’s Top R&B Albums chart.

Her sophomore album Trouble In Paradise dropped in August 2024, recorded largely in Saint Lucia. The 16-track project features appearances from Ty Dolla $ign, Anderson .Paak, YG Marley, Jeremih and a reunion with sister Halle on the track “Want Me.”

Bailey described the album to Nylon as “a coming-of-age celebration of being a woman and having fun, not taking life too seriously.” The project’s singles include “FYS” and “Boy Bye,” which Bailey released ahead of her Coachella performance in April 2024.

Beyond music, Bailey has pursued acting roles in television series including Grown-ish and the psychological thriller Swarm. She won an NAACP Image Award for her lead role in the film Praise This.

Fan Support and Social Media Response

Fans flooded social media with supportive messages following Bailey’s livestream clap back. Many praised the singer for confidently defending herself and refusing to let trolls dictate how she should feel about her body.

One Instagram user wrote that people need to stop commenting on others’ bodies, while another commended Bailey for telling the commenter to share their own photos for judgment.

Bailey’s sister Halle has also spoken openly about body insecurity, particularly while adjusting to her postpartum body after giving birth to her son Halo in 2023. In a Snapchat post, Halle revealed she felt insecure about being “a little bit thicker” than usual and had even asked Chloe to delete a TikTok video because she felt uncomfortable about her appearance.

The Bailey sisters serve as examples that even the most talented and accomplished women in the entertainment industry face constant pressure and criticism about their bodies.

Will more celebrities follow Bailey’s example by directly confronting body-shamers during livestreams?
