MINNEAPOLIS, MN (TDR) — At least twelve federal prosecutors resigned from the Justice Department on Monday, one week after Immigration and Customs Enforcement agent Jonathan Ross shot and killed 37-year-old U.S. citizen Renee Nicole Good in Minneapolis, as protests erupted in more than 1,000 cities nationwide demanding accountability.
Former acting U.S. Attorney Joseph H. Thompson and five other federal prosecutors in the District of Minnesota resigned their positions due to concerns about the Justice Department’s approach to the case, according to The New York Times. Six additional prosecutors in the Justice Department’s Civil Rights Division who were planning to retire or quit accelerated their departures.
DOJ Investigation Sparks Resignations
The resignations followed the Justice Department’s decision to investigate Good’s widow while declining to open a federal civil rights investigation into Ross’s actions. The Civil Rights Division’s criminal section chief, principal deputy chief, deputy chief and acting deputy chief all resigned after Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights Harmeet Dhillon decided against investigating whether Good’s federal rights had been violated.

U.S. Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche stated Monday there was “no basis for a criminal civil rights investigation,” a declaration that coincided with the wave of prosecutorial resignations.
The federal government reportedly tasked FBI and DOJ investigators with analyzing any connections Good might have had to activist groups protesting the Trump administration’s immigration policies, according to The New York Times.
Fatal Encounter Captured on Video
Good was shot January 7 after stopping her maroon Honda Pilot sideways on a Minneapolis street during an ICE operation. The 37-year-old mother had just dropped off her 6-year-old son at school when she encountered federal agents.
Multiple videos show Ross circling Good’s vehicle on foot before walking to the front-left as she began driving away. ABC News analysis of body camera footage shows Good turned her steering wheel to the right, away from Ross, just over one second before he fired three shots. The time between shots was 399 milliseconds for the first two and 299 milliseconds for the second and third.

Department of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem defended the shooting, claiming Good tried to “weaponize her vehicle” to run over Ross in an “attempt to kill or to cause bodily harm to agents.” However, Noem declined to answer whether the officer opened fire before or after allegedly being struck by the vehicle.
Local Officials Dispute Federal Claims
Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey strongly disputed federal accounts after reviewing the video footage. “Having seen the video myself, I want to tell everybody directly that is bullshit,” Frey said, adding: “To ICE, get the fuck out of Minneapolis.”
Minnesota Governor Tim Walz proclaimed January 9 “Renee Good Day” and joined calls for ICE to end its presence in the city. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, alongside Minneapolis and Saint Paul officials, filed suit Monday against ICE over the shooting.
Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara noted video evidence contradicted federal claims. “There is nothing to indicate that this woman was the target of any law enforcement investigation or activity,” police said in a statement.
Nationwide Protests Mobilize
The “ICE Out For Good” campaign organized more than 1,000 demonstrations across the United States over the weekend following Good’s death. Tens of thousands marched Saturday in Minneapolis, while large crowds gathered in Philadelphia, New York, Washington D.C., Los Angeles, Boston, Chicago and dozens of smaller cities.
Progressive coalition Indivisible coordinated the weekend demonstrations, with co-executive director Leah Greenberg stating people came together to “grieve, honor those we’ve lost, and demand accountability from a system that has operated with impunity for far too long.”
In Minneapolis Friday night, approximately 1,000 protesters gathered for a “noise protest” outside hotels where ICE agents were reportedly staying. About 30 people were arrested after a small group broke away from peaceful demonstrators and caused property damage. One police officer was injured by thrown ice.
Family Describes Compassionate Mother
Good’s wife Becca Good released a statement saying the couple had “whistles” while federal agents “had guns” when they stopped to support neighbors. “Renee lived by an overarching belief: there is kindness in the world and we need to do everything we can to find it where it resides and nurture it where it needs to grow,” she said.
Good’s mother Donna Ganger told the Minnesota Star Tribune her daughter was “one of the kindest people I’ve ever known” who “taken care of people all her life.” Good graduated from Old Dominion University in 2020 with an English degree and was described as a poet and loving mother of three.
The shooting occurred about one mile from where George Floyd was murdered by Minneapolis police in 2020, an incident that sparked worldwide protests over police brutality.
Schools Close Amid Safety Concerns
Minneapolis Public Schools cancelled classes for the remainder of the week citing safety concerns after the shooting and ICE’s use of pepper spray and pepper balls against students at Roosevelt High School. Witnesses said masked, armed officers came onto campus tackling people and tussling with students as dismissal time ended.
Vice President JD Vance called Good’s death “a tragedy of her own making” while expressing support for ICE agents. The shooting was the ninth time since September that ICE agents had opened fire on people in five states and Washington, D.C., according to reports.
Will the prosecutorial resignations force a federal civil rights investigation into Ross’s actions?
