• American and British military personnel are departing bases in the Persian Gulf region as Washington weighs intervention options in Iran
  • Qatar confirmed the drawdown Wednesday, citing regional tensions as Iran threatens to strike US installations if attacked
  • The repositioning follows Trump’s promise to Iranian protesters that “help is on its way” after canceling talks with Tehran

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — The United States has begun withdrawing military personnel from key bases across the Middle East as tensions with Iran escalate, with officials characterizing the moves as precautionary measures rather than evacuation orders.

A US official confirmed to Reuters on Wednesday that personnel were departing installations throughout the region, including Al Udeid Air Base in Qatar — the largest American military installation in the Middle East, housing approximately 10,000 troops. Qatar’s International Media Office acknowledged the departures, stating the measures were being undertaken in response to current regional tensions.

Middle East Troop Withdrawal Follows Iranian Threats

The repositioning comes after a senior Iranian official warned regional countries that Tehran would target American bases in their territories if Washington launches military strikes. According to Reuters, Iran has communicated these threats to Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates and Turkey, requesting they prevent the United States from attacking.

“Tehran has told regional countries, from Saudi Arabia and UAE to Turkey, that US bases in those countries will be attacked if the US targets Iran.”

A diplomat familiar with the situation described the military repositioning as a posture change rather than an ordered evacuation, though no specific reason was provided for the timing. Britain has followed suit, with the UK Ministry of Defence confirming Wednesday that personnel were being withdrawn from the Qatari installation as a precautionary measure.

The Al Udeid facility was previously targeted by Iranian missiles in June 2025 after American forces struck three nuclear sites during Israel’s 12-day war with the Islamic Republic. Pentagon officials managed to evacuate a majority of the base’s personnel before that attack, with US air defenses intercepting all but one incoming missile and causing no casualties.

Trump Cancels Iranian Talks, Promises “Help” to Protesters

The troop movements coincide with President Donald Trump’s escalating rhetoric toward Tehran. On Tuesday, Trump announced via Truth Social that he had canceled all meetings with Iranian officials, urging protesters to continue demonstrating against the clerical government.

“Iranian Patriots, KEEP PROTESTING – TAKE OVER YOUR INSTITUTIONS!!! Save the names of the killers and abusers. They will pay a big price.”

The president has repeatedly threatened military intervention if Iranian security forces continue killing demonstrators. When asked about potential retaliation against American installations, Trump warned Tehran that any attack would be met with unprecedented force.

White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt indicated that air strikes remain among the options available to the commander-in-chief, though diplomacy is the preferred approach. Senior administration officials met Tuesday to discuss intervention possibilities, with options ranging from targeted sanctions to cyber operations aimed at disrupting regime activities.

Death Toll Mounts as Judiciary Signals Rapid Executions

The diplomatic confrontation unfolds against a backdrop of devastating violence within Iran. The Human Rights Activists News Agency reported Wednesday that at least 2,586 people have been killed in the security crackdown, including 2,417 protesters and 147 government-affiliated personnel. More than 18,400 individuals have been detained.

Some estimates place the death toll substantially higher, with Iran International reporting figures as high as 12,000 based on hospital data and eyewitness accounts. British Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper told Parliament Tuesday that casualties could prove significantly higher than initial estimates suggested.

Iran’s judiciary head, Gholamhossein Mohseni-Ejei, signaled Wednesday that detained protesters would face expedited trials and executions, directly challenging Trump’s warnings about consequences for such actions.

“If we want to do a job, we should do it now. If we want to do something, we have to do it quickly. If it becomes late, two months, three months later, it doesn’t have the same effect.”

European Officials Anticipate Imminent Action

Two European officials told Reuters they believe American military intervention could occur within 24 hours. The US Navy currently has three missile-firing destroyers and at least one submarine positioned in the region, though the aircraft carrier USS Gerald Ford — deployed to the Caribbean for operations in Latin America — would require roughly two weeks to reach the Persian Gulf.

The protests, which began in late December over economic conditions and the collapse of Iran’s rial currency, have expanded into broader demands for an end to clerical rule. Analysts have described the unrest as the most significant challenge to the Islamic Republic since the 1979 revolution that brought the current government to power.

Iranian Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi accused Washington of manufacturing a pretext for military intervention, claiming Israel has consistently attempted to draw the United States into fighting wars on its behalf.

With American forces repositioning across the Persian Gulf and European allies expressing concern about imminent military action, the question remains whether Trump’s warnings will translate into direct intervention or serve as leverage in an increasingly volatile standoff?
