Donald Trump's advantage in Florida, his home turf, has reportedly shrunk, making the state a competitive battleground for Kamala Harris, recent polls indicate. The ex-president is ahead of the vice president by a mere two points in Florida, home to his Mar-a-Lago estate.

This is according to a poll released on Thursday by Napolitan News Service and carried out by RMG Research, which tends to lean Republican. The survey highlighted a pronounced gap between different age groups. Among younger voters in Florida, Harris has emerged as the clear favorite with 55 percent backing her over Trump's 43 percent. In contrast, Trump holds sway over older Floridians, securing 53 percent of voters aged 65 and above compared to Harris's 44 percent.

The gender split also presents an interesting dynamic; Harris is more popular among women with 49 percent support against Trump’s 47 percent. However, Trump has the upper hand among male voters, capturing 53 percent to Harris’s 45 percent. Racial demographics show significant differences too; an overwhelming majority of Black voters—87 percent—prefer Harris while only 13 percent support Trump. Hispanic voters also largely favor Harris at 60 percent versus Trump’s 37 percent. White voters tend toward Trump with a 57 percent support rate compared to Harris’ 39 percent.

This tight competition reflects a dramatic shift in the political landscape since Harris joined the race in late July. Initially, Trump was leading by nearly nine points after Biden exited the race, based on FiveThirtyEight’s polling averages. Since then, Harris has managed to close the gap in a state that Trump won by a margin of 3.3 points back in 2020.

The timing of this poll—from September 25-27—was just before Hurricane Helene hit, causing widespread destruction across the state and its neighbors. It remains uncertain how this disaster might influence voter sentiment moving forward.

In light of this tragic event, both candidates are taking active steps; while Harris plans to visit North Carolina—another state affected by Helene—to assess the damage personally, Trump has already made his visit there earlier this week.

During his visit, he criticized what he described as inadequate federal response efforts directed towards North Carolina—a statement made shortly after accusing via Truth Social post that both Biden-Harris administration and North Carolina's Democratic Governor Roy Cooper deliberately neglected Republican areas during disaster relief efforts.

As election day draws near under these complex circumstances—including natural disasters and shifting political allegiances—the final outcome in Florida remains more unpredictable than ever.
