UNION CITY, GA (TDR) — Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche acknowledged Sunday he cannot explain why Director of National Intelligence Tulsi Gabbard was present during Wednesday’s FBI raid at a Fulton County election facility, despite defending her overall role in election security efforts.
When pressed on CNN’s State of the Union about Gabbard’s presence at the Georgia raid, Blanche offered a candid response that has intensified scrutiny of the intelligence director’s involvement in domestic law enforcement operations.
“I don’t know why the director was there. She is not part of the grand jury investigation, but she is for sure a key part of our efforts at election integrity and making sure that we have free and fair elections.”

The appearance of the nation’s top intelligence official at a domestic FBI operation has drawn criticism from national security experts and Democratic lawmakers who say it violates traditional boundaries between foreign intelligence work and domestic law enforcement. Reuters photographer Elijah Nouvelage captured images of Gabbard wearing a dark jacket and baseball cap, speaking on the phone outside the Fulton County Election Hub.
Former Attorney General Eric Holder expressed alarm about the development, telling CNN anchor Laura Coates he has “huge concerns” about Gabbard’s presence.
“I have huge concerns. The director of national intelligence heads agencies that look out from our borders into foreign nations. Look at our enemies, those who do harm to the nation.”
The FBI search warrant sought 2020 election records as part of an investigation into President Donald Trump’s longstanding claims about election fraud in Georgia. Trump lost the state to Joe Biden in 2020, a result that has been certified and withstood numerous legal challenges.
Election Security Jurisdiction Disputed

Blanche attempted to justify Gabbard’s involvement by citing her expertise in election security matters, though he acknowledged limitations on what he could discuss about the ongoing investigation.
“She’s an expert in that space. And it’s a big part of what she and her team look at every day.”
An ODNI spokesperson told ABC News that Gabbard considers election security “essential” to national security and is acting within her authorities alongside interagency partners to safeguard election infrastructure.
“As DNI, she has a vital role in identifying vulnerabilities in our critical infrastructure and protecting against exploitation.”
However, two senior officials with knowledge of the matter told NBC News that Gabbard’s presence was unnecessary and was not requested by the Justice Department.
“It seems to be an attempt to make herself relevant. It’s so strange.”
Congressional Oversight Demanded
Democratic leaders on both the Senate Intelligence Committee and House Intelligence Committee have demanded Gabbard testify about her appearance at the facility. Senator Mark Warner of Virginia, the vice chairman of the Senate Select Committee on Intelligence, issued a sharp rebuke on social media platform X.
“Why did Tulsi Gabbard take part in a raid on an elections office? We need to step up to protect our elections from this administration’s meddling.”
Warner and Representative Jim Himes, the top Democrat on the House Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence, sent a letter to Gabbard seeking an explanation for her involvement in the Fulton County election probe.
Representative Joaquin Castro of Texas called Gabbard’s involvement “extremely unusual” and urged the intelligence committee to exercise its oversight power.
“It’s extremely unusual that the DNI would be present for this type of domestic operation, and it’s something that the intelligence committee should investigate right away.”
Context Of 2020 Election Investigation
The FBI raid occurred at the same Fulton County facility that was central to the 2023 racketeering case brought by District Attorney Fani Willis against Trump and 18 others. That case, which alleged a conspiracy to subvert Biden’s Georgia victory, was dismissed last year after Willis was disqualified due to a romantic relationship with prosecutor Nathan Wade.
Local officials expressed frustration that federal authorities executed a search warrant for records that were already subject to active litigation and likely to be unsealed within weeks.
“We in Fulton County have nothing, nothing, nothing to hide.”
Fulton County Commission Chairman Robb Pitts stated officials could have obtained the records through regular legal channels. Georgia Senator Jon Ossoff characterized the raid as part of Trump’s “sore loser’s crusade.”
“Trump lost Georgia in 2020. But today he continued his sore loser’s crusade with an FBI raid on a Georgia election office. From Minnesota to Georgia, we’re watching the President unravel, weaponizing federal law enforcement for personal power and revenge.”
Wall Street Journal Reports Months-Long Investigation
According to a Wall Street Journal report, Gabbard has spent months investigating the results of the 2020 election that Trump lost, a role that extends beyond her traditional foreign intelligence responsibilities. White House officials told the Journal that Gabbard is leading the administration’s effort to re-examine the election and look for potential crimes.
The report suggests Gabbard has been regularly briefing Trump and his chief of staff Susie Wiles, as well as far-right activist Cleta Mitchell and former Trump campaign lawyer Kurt Olsen, who helped mount the “Stop the Steal” lawsuits.
Trump defended Gabbard’s involvement when asked by reporters Thursday night at the Kennedy Center.
“She’s working very hard on trying to keep the elections safe, and she’s done a very good job. You got a signed judge’s order in Georgia, and you’re going to see some interesting things happening. They’ve been trying to get there for a long time.”
Should the director of national intelligence be involved in domestic election investigations, or does this cross traditional boundaries between intelligence and law enforcement?
