E2294: One Bill Away – What Americans Actually Want, and What It Costs 10/19

Wayne starts with two real people, Miguel in Michigan and Joan in Florida, and asks what Americans say they want. According to the McKinsey Institute for Economic Mobility, two-thirds of 30,000 people named financial security as their top goal. According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics, prices rose 3.7% over the past year while real hourly pay fell about 0.7%. According to AAA, gas averaged about $4.30 a gallon on October 19, more than a dollar above a year ago. Wayne explains why security and the cost of living have become one story, how both parties have been punished by voters when prices stayed high, and why agreement on goals falls apart once a price tag is attached. He closes with five questions to ask any candidate before Election Day on November 3.
