In a recent development, Zijie Li, a 39-year-old Chinese national, was detained on Thursday for trying to unlawfully enter Mar-a-Lago, the Florida estate of President-elect Donald Trump. This was not Li’s first attempt; over the last few months, he has made several efforts to access the property with the intent of communicating with Trump. Following his latest endeavor, Li now faces a new trespassing charge in addition to an earlier charge from July. He is currently held at the Palm Beach County Main Detention Center with bail set at $100,000.
Li’s initial attempt to breach Mar-a-Lago security occurred on July 19, shortly after an assassination attempt on Trump was foiled. Since that incident, which took place during a campaign rally in Butler, Pennsylvania, security measures around the club have been significantly bolstered. According to reports, Li breached the main gate but was quickly intercepted by Secret Service agents. He claimed to possess information about China’s involvement in the assassination attempt and wished to relay documents regarding this.
Following this incident and despite being issued a trespass warning by local police—Trump being absent from Mar-a-Lago at that time due to his attendance at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee—Li visited Palm Beach multiple times without attempting further entry into Mar-a-Lago.

On one occasion in late July, Li distributed paperwork related to Trump across vehicles in Palm Beach and was arrested the next day for trespassing at Mar-a-Lago. After posting bond under the condition of staying away from the club by at least 500 feet, Li once again sought entry into Mar-a-Lago on October 30 by soliciting help from a local resident. This led to his detention under Florida’s Baker Act for temporary mental health evaluation before his most recent arrest upon returning to Mar-a-Lago.
Officials noted that Li is in the United States on a student visa from California. With President-elect Trump securing another term and constitutionally barred from seeking a third term afterward, speculation around potential successors has begun swirling. Currently leading predictions is Vice President-elect JD Vance as a frontrunner for presidency following Trump’s tenure.
Vance’s speculated candidacy tops other notable figures such as former First Lady Michelle Obama and California Governor Gavin Newsom among others according to betting odds and political commentators’ assessments based on historical precedents of vice presidents ascending to presidency post serving their term.
This case highlights ongoing security concerns surrounding high-profile political figures and properties amidst an increasingly tense political climate. It also underscores broader discussions about potential future leadership within American politics as transitions loom on the horizon.
