At approximately 9:30 a.m., the fatal event occurred at the now-defunct Columbia Heights Elementary School, located in the 1600 block of Fitch Street near West Southcross Boulevard. Officer William Kasberg, a 30-year SAPD veteran nearing retirement, tragically lost his life under circumstances that have deeply shaken the local law enforcement community.
Sequence of Events Leading to the Accident
According to Chief William McManus, who detailed the events during a briefing at the scene, Officer Kasberg had arrived early to attend Advanced Law Enforcement Rapid Response Training (ALERRT), a program mandated for all Texas police officers. While unloading equipment from his pickup truck, his firearm accidentally discharged.
Soon after, a fellow officer heading to the same training discovered Kasberg injured beside his vehicle and immediately called for help. Although he was rushed to University Hospital, he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
