The survey, conducted by Emerson College Polling, shows that 41 percent of adults under 30 view Thompson’s killing as acceptable. Surprisingly, this slightly exceeds the 40 percent within the same age group who consider it unacceptable. Consequently, these findings reflect growing frustration with health insurance companies and have sparked debates about societal attitudes toward violence and justice.

Arrest of Suspect Luigi Mangione

Meanwhile, authorities arrested Luigi Mangione, a 26-year-old accused of murdering Thompson, in Pennsylvania after a McDonald’s employee identified him. Following this, police apprehended him on December 9. While he currently faces gun charges in Pennsylvania, officials are working to extradite him to New York for a murder trial.

Therefore, these numbers highlight a concerning divide in perceptions based on age.

Social media posts have amplified public opinion, with numerous users expressing little sympathy for Thompson’s death. As a result, these reactions suggest a disconnect between public sentiment and the gravity of the crime.

Spencer Kimball from Emerson College Polling emphasizes that these findings reveal shifting attitudes within younger demographics and across political affiliations. Notably, Democrats are more likely to find the killing acceptable compared to independents and Republicans.
