An Azerbaijan Airlines flight, carrying 67 people, crashed on Wednesday near Aktau, Kazakhstan, killing 38 passengers and crew members. The Embraer 190 aircraft, en route from Baku, Azerbaijan, to Grozny, Russia, attempted an emergency landing 1.8 miles from Aktau airport but crashed, erupted into flames, and split into two, according to officials from Azerbaijan Airlines.

The flight changed course shortly before the crash. According to Rosaviatsia, Russia’s aviation authority, the plane initially diverted to Aktau due to an onboard emergency. Azerbaijan Airlines, however, later attributed the change in course to worsening weather conditions. During its descent near Aktau airport, the plane hit the ground.

Onboard the flight were 62 passengers and five crew members. Kazakhstan’s Emergencies Ministry released the initial death toll, while the country’s Health Ministry later confirmed a list of 29 survivors, including two children. Survivors received medical treatment at nearby facilities.
