• Omar Rodriguez, 75, was sentenced to life in prison for the 2015 second-degree murder of Jose Rey, following an argument over Rey’s dog that escalated into a fatal shooting.
  • Rodriguez attempted to manipulate evidence by planting a knife near Rey’s body and showed no remorse during court proceedings, even interrupting the victim's wife with offensive remarks.
  • Rey’s widow, Lissette, delivered a powerful impact statement, expressing her grief and frustration, while the case underscores the devastating consequences of unchecked anger and violence.

A Miami judge sentenced Omar Rodriguez, 75, to life in prison for second-degree murder and aggravated assault in the shooting death of Jose Rey nearly a decade ago. Rodriguez, who claimed self-defense, was found guilty for killing Rey after a heated argument escalated into violence in June 2015.

The Dispute That Turned Deadly

The dispute began when Rodriguez accused Rey’s dog of defecating on his son’s yard. Neighbors reported overhearing the two men shouting at each other just moments before the altercation escalated. Rodriguez alleged that Rey threatened to return and fight him after their argument. Rey, 52, went home to leave his dog and later continued walking with his wife, Lissette Rey. However, Rodriguez, now shirtless, confronted the couple in the neighborhood, according to the Miami Herald.

The Shooting and Its Aftermath

Rodriguez fired three shots at Rey, leaving him gravely injured. When Lissette ran to aid her husband, Rodriguez threatened her as well. Rey succumbed to his injuries weeks later, and Rodriguez was arrested for the shooting. During the investigation, authorities discovered that Rodriguez had attempted to plant a knife near Rey’s body, falsely claiming Rey had threatened him with it.

A Powerful Victim Impact Statement

During the August sentencing hearing, Lissette Rey delivered an emotional victim impact statement, urging Miami-Dade Circuit Judge Milton Hirsch to impose the harshest possible sentence. “I beg Your Honor, the harshest sentence imposed to the coward, the murderer,” she said. However, Rodriguez interrupted her, shouting, “The coward was your husband. That’s why I killed him. He cried like a baby.” Court officials quickly removed Rodriguez, but his words echoed through the halls.

Lissette continued her statement, expressing grief and frustration. She lamented that while Rodriguez will still have contact with his family in prison, she will never see her husband again. “I pray he spends the rest of his pitiful existence in prison,” she said. She also voiced disappointment that the death penalty was not an option, adding, “I wish though the death sentence would have been on the table.”

Sentencing and Legal Consequences

The jury decided against the death penalty, sentencing Rodriguez to life in prison with a minimum of 25 years. At his age, this virtually ensures he will never leave prison. The case highlights the tragic consequences of escalating disputes and irrational anger.

Lack of Remorse and Courtroom Outburst

Prosecutors argued that Rodriguez’s actions, including manipulating evidence by planting a knife, underscored his lack of remorse. His courtroom outburst further demonstrated his disregard for the emotional toll his actions took on Rey’s family.

Lissette denounced Rodriguez, calling him a “narcissistic piece of scum.” While the sentence may bring some sense of justice, the Rey family remains heartbroken over the senseless loss of a husband and father.
