• Mike Johnson, endorsed by Donald Trump, faces significant challenges in his bid for Speaker of the House, with key GOP members like Chip Roy and Thomas Massie expressing doubts about his chances.
  • Divisions within the Republican Party center on fiscal policy, with lawmakers pushing for guarantees on spending cuts and budget reforms before offering their support.
  • Johnson’s narrow path to victory requires near-unanimous Republican backing, as Democrats are poised to support Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, intensifying the leadership battle.

Mike Johnson, backed by former President Donald Trump, is facing significant hurdles in his bid to return as Speaker of the House. Trump’s “complete and total endorsement” may not be enough to prevent a contentious leadership battle on Friday. With divisions within the Republican Party and concerns over fiscal policy, many GOP members remain undecided.

Key GOP Members Voice Doubts

Republican Rep. Chip Roy expressed skepticism about Johnson’s chances, stating on Fox Business Network, “Right now, I don’t believe he has the votes on Friday.” Roy, along with several colleagues, has yet to decide whether to support Johnson. These lawmakers worry about past failures and potential obstacles to advancing the Republican agenda. Roy highlighted the spending bill passed late last year as a particular concern, emphasizing the need to cut spending to address inflation.

Additionally, Roy suggested alternative candidates, naming Byron Donalds and Jim Jordan as possible contenders. “Byron Donalds is a good man and a good friend. Jim Jordan’s a good man and a good friend,” Roy said, signaling that other leaders within the conference might step up to challenge Johnson.

Narrow Margin Poses Risks for Johnson

If all 215 House Democrats vote for their caucus leader, Rep. Hakeem Jeffries, Johnson can afford to lose only one Republican vote to secure the speakership. However, GOP Rep. Thomas Massie has already declared his opposition, promising to vote for another candidate. Massie criticized Trump’s endorsement of Johnson, comparing it to the former president’s backing of Paul Ryan. “I respect and support President Trump, but his endorsement of Mike Johnson is going to work out about as well as his endorsement of Speaker Paul Ryan,” Massie stated on X, formerly Twitter.

Budget Concerns Divide Republicans

Beyond personal preferences, Republican skepticism stems largely from disagreements over budget policy. Lawmakers like Roy and other members are pushing for assurances that Johnson will prioritize fiscal discipline. Rep. Victoria Spartz voiced these concerns, stating on X, “We need guarantees that Johnson won’t sell us out to the swamp.” Many within the GOP want stronger commitments to spending cuts and budget reforms before offering their support.

Leadership Fight Looms

With crucial votes approaching, Republicans remain divided on Johnson’s candidacy. The Washington Post reports that other House Republicans have similarly refused to commit, citing concerns over Johnson’s ability to address fiscal challenges and unify the party. As the Friday vote nears, Johnson must rally support from hesitant members while addressing the broader concerns that could undermine his bid.
