A 21-year-old Thai influencer, Thankam Kanthee, known online as "Bank Leicester," tragically died after accepting a dare to drink an entire bottle of whiskey at a birthday celebration. The incident, which occurred on December 26 in Chanthaburi, resulted in his death from alcohol poisoning. Authorities have since launched an investigation, and the party organizer faces charges of negligence leading to death.
Death Follows Risky Dare for Money
Kanthee, popular for his extreme stunts and dares on social media, undertook the fatal challenge reportedly for 30,000 Thai baht (around $875). During the party, attendees encouraged him as he consumed a 350ml bottle of alcohol in one go. Moments later, Kanthee began vomiting and lost consciousness around 3:40 a.m. Despite being rushed to the hospital, doctors were unable to save him, and he was pronounced dead.
History of Dangerous Challenges
Known for performing risky tasks to financially support his family, Kanthee had previously accepted dares involving hazardous substances such as hand sanitizer and large amounts of wasabi. His untimely death has shocked his followers, some of whom expressed grief and anger online. One follower wrote, "I feel sorry for you, brother. The person who let you drink must live with that guilt forever." Another stated, "Rest in peace, Bank. I hope justice is served, and your family gets support."
Party Organizer Faces Legal Consequences
Authorities identified Ekkachart "Em" Meephrom, the party's organizer, as the individual who offered the dare. Meephrom admitted to negligence and is now in custody, charged with causing death through negligence under Thailand's penal code. If convicted, he could face up to 10 years in prison, a fine of 200,000 baht, or both. The court denied Meephrom bail, and he will remain detained for at least 12 days while the investigation continues.
Community Calls for Accountability
This tragic incident has drawn attention to the risks of extreme dares and the responsibility of those who encourage such behavior. Kanthee’s death serves as a stark reminder of the dangers involved in pursuing financial incentives through life-threatening actions. Many have called for stricter regulations and greater accountability for individuals creating harmful environments.
Kanthee’s passing highlights the need for increased awareness about the dangers of social media challenges and their impact. As a global community, we must prioritize the safety and well-being of individuals over content or financial gain. If you or someone you know feels pressured to take on harmful dares, seek help and speak to others about the risks. Let’s work together to prevent similar tragedies in the future.
