• President Biden acknowledged concerns about his age and the need to “pass the baton” as he entered his 80s.
  • He decided not to run in 2024, endorsing Vice President Kamala Harris after believing he was the best candidate to defeat Trump in 2020.
  • Biden highlighted his legacy, focusing on rebuilding the economy, restoring global leadership, and his strong relationships with world leaders.

President Joe Biden openly addressed concerns about his age and reflected on his legacy during an interview in the Oval Office with USA Today. He admitted uncertainty about whether he could have handled another four years in office, while reiterating his belief that he would have beaten former President Donald Trump in a rematch.

Biden Admits Doubts About Serving Another Term

When asked by USA Today’s Susan Page if he would have had the strength to serve another four years, Biden responded candidly, “I don’t know.” He explained that while he believed he was the best candidate to defeat Trump in 2020, he had doubts about leading the country into his mid-80s. “I wasn’t looking to be president when I was 85 or 86 years old. And so I did talk about passing the baton,” Biden said, acknowledging his own limits as the oldest president in U.S. history.

Biden’s remarks echo concerns raised by both the public and media outlets regarding his stamina at 82 years old. Reports from The Wall Street Journal and The New York Times have highlighted doubts expressed by current and former White House staffers about Biden’s ability to maintain his demanding schedule. Despite these concerns, Biden optimistically added, “So far, so good. But who knows what I’m going to be when I’m 86 years old?”

Decision to Exit the 2024 Race

The president once again stated that he believed he could have defeated Trump in a rematch. However, his shaky debate performance in June, which exposed cognitive struggles his supporters had previously downplayed, led to his decision to exit the race. Following his withdrawal, Biden endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who ultimately lost the general election.

Biden reflected on his decision to run initially, saying, “I thought I was the person. I had no intention of running after [my son] Beau died — for real, not a joke. But when Trump was running again, I thought I had the best chance of beating him.” Nevertheless, he recognized that stepping aside was necessary, stating that passing the leadership torch was something he intended to do as he entered his 80s.

Legacy and Experience as Strengths

In the interview, Biden also discussed his hopes for how history will view his presidency. He emphasized his efforts to restore the U.S. economy and reestablish America’s leadership on the global stage. “I hope that history says I came in with a plan to restore the economy and reestablish America’s leadership in the world,” he said.

Biden argued that his age gave him unique advantages, particularly his decades-long relationships with world leaders and his understanding of historical shifts across regions. “The only advantage of being an old guy is that I’ve known every major world leader for a long time,” Biden explained. He added, “That perspective helped me navigate fundamental changes in Europe, Latin America, the Middle East, and the Far East.”

Final Thoughts on Leadership and Challenges

As Biden reflected on his time in office, he appeared to embrace both his accomplishments and his limitations. While his decision to leave the 2024 race marked a pivotal moment, his focus on experience and legacy suggests his pride in how he approached leadership during uncertain times.
