- Officials urge donors to research organizations using tools like Charity Navigator and opt for secure, traceable payment methods.
- Law enforcement pledges to investigate and prosecute scammers, with harsh penalties for those exploiting disaster relief efforts.
As wildfires rage across Los Angeles County, officials have issued a warning about a growing threat: scammers exploiting the disaster to deceive those eager to help fire victims. Law enforcement and state leaders are urging the public to remain vigilant and avoid falling victim to fraudulent schemes masquerading as charitable organizations.
Scammers Exploit Generosity Amid Crisis
California Attorney General Rob Bonta raised the alarm during a Saturday press conference, cautioning that scammers are preying on the goodwill of donors. He explained that while many people are eager to support fire victims, bad actors are taking advantage of their compassion by operating fake charities and nonprofits.

“We have people with big hearts who want to help—they want to donate, they want to support the victims,” Bonta said. “But we also have scammers exploiting that generosity by defrauding these well-meaning individuals.”
These scams often target vulnerable populations, including the elderly, immigrants, and non-English speakers, Bonta noted. Fraudulent organizations may even adopt names that sound convincingly legitimate to mislead donors.
Tips for Identifying Legitimate Charities
To protect against scams, officials recommend that donors research charities thoroughly before making contributions. Los Angeles Police Chief Jim McDonnell suggested using resources like Charity Navigator and the Better Business Bureau to verify organizations.
“Take time to thoroughly research the charity or organization that you’re considering,” McDonnell said during a Sunday briefing. “Reputable groups will provide clear information about their mission and have proven track records.”

Additionally, platforms like GoFundMe are working to ensure transparency by verifying wildfire-related fundraisers. The site also curates lists of trusted organizations, such as World Central Kitchen, Pasadena Humane, and Baby2Baby, to guide donors toward legitimate causes.
How to Safely Donate
Officials encourage donors to avoid cash contributions whenever possible, opting instead for secure, traceable payment methods. These methods help ensure that donations reach their intended recipients and provide a trail for authorities in case of suspected fraud.
McDonnell urged the public to report questionable donation requests directly to law enforcement. This allows officials to investigate and take action against any individuals or groups attempting to exploit the disaster.
Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert G. Luna echoed this sentiment, promising that law enforcement stands ready to prosecute scammers targeting fire relief efforts. “We are eager to hold anyone accountable who preys on people’s generosity during such a difficult time,” he said.
Harsh Penalties for Scammers
Attorney General Bonta reiterated the state’s commitment to cracking down on fraudulent activity, vowing to hold scammers accountable for their actions. He warned that those caught exploiting the tragedy will face severe consequences.
“To anyone who would take advantage of this tragedy for their greedy gain, who would victimize people who have already lost everything, I have a message: You will be held accountable,” Bonta declared. “My office is prepared to ensure justice is served.”
