President Joe Biden defended his foreign policy record Monday, asserting that the United States is safer and stronger after his leadership. Speaking at the State Department just days before leaving office, Biden highlighted his administration’s achievements, including NATO expansion, aid to Ukraine, and efforts to compete with China. However, critics, including President-elect Donald Trump, have been quick to label his tenure as a failure, pointing to crises such as Afghanistan and Gaza.

Biden Touts Accomplishments in NATO and Ukraine

Biden praised his administration’s work in strengthening alliances, particularly NATO. He emphasized rallying Western allies to support Ukraine against Russia’s military aggression. The U.S. alone delivered over $100 billion in military and economic aid to Ukraine, which Biden claimed has allowed Kyiv to remain independent and resist Russian President Vladimir Putin’s forces.

“America is stronger, our alliances are stronger, and our adversaries are weaker,” Biden stated, casting his foreign policy as a triumph.

Despite these assertions, Trump and his allies have criticized the financial cost of aiding Ukraine, arguing it hurts American taxpayers. Trump vowed to end the conflict quickly, calling Biden’s approach ineffective.

Afghanistan Withdrawal: A Defining Moment

Biden remains unapologetic about the chaotic U.S. withdrawal from Afghanistan, which ended America’s longest war. He fulfilled his campaign promise but faced severe backlash due to the collapse of the Afghan government, a deadly airport bombing, and images of desperate evacuations.

“Ending the war was the right thing to do, and I believe history will reflect that,” Biden said, rejecting claims that the withdrawal weakened American alliances or increased terrorism risks.

He also backed Israel’s strikes on Hezbollah in Lebanon and even inside Iran. Biden claimed these moves weakened Iran’s influence in the region.

“Iran is weaker than it’s been in decades,” Biden declared, pointing to the degradation of Hezbollah and the ousting of Syrian leader Bashar Assad.

However, Biden has faced growing criticism over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza. Over 46,000 Palestinians have died, and Gaza remains in ruins, with limited access to food and healthcare. Pro-Palestinian activists called for an arms embargo on Israel, but Biden’s administration recently approved an $8 billion weapons sale to the country.

Critics Say Biden Failed to Lead

Republicans and some foreign policy analysts argue Biden’s approach lacked clear direction. The Afghanistan debacle, ongoing war in Ukraine, and devastation in Gaza have all dented his reputation. Critics claim Biden failed to anticipate the consequences of his policies or effectively manage crises.

“Biden will pay a reputational cost for the devastation in Gaza,” said Aaron David Miller, a former State Department negotiator. “His administration lacked the ability or willingness to impose meaningful restraint on Israel.”

Looking Ahead: Transition to Trump

As Biden prepares to leave office, he expressed confidence that his administration has left the next president with a strong foreign policy foundation. Nonetheless, Trump and his team have vowed to take a different approach. Trump has promised to prioritize American interests, bring an end to foreign conflicts, and focus on domestic concerns.

White House national security adviser Jake Sullivan urged the incoming administration to continue backing Ukraine to maintain leverage against Russia. Trump, however, has signaled a departure from Biden’s strategy, emphasizing a hardline stance against Hamas and critiquing the cost of foreign entanglements.
