Former Democratic Senator Bob Menendez, convicted last year on federal corruption charges, is reportedly turning to President-elect Donald Trump for a pardon. According to an NBC News report, Menendez and his associates have reached out to gauge Trump’s willingness to grant clemency, as efforts to secure a pardon from President Joe Biden continue to fall flat.

Menendez Eyes Trump for Clemency

Menendez, who is scheduled for sentencing on January 29, faces a potential 15-year prison term. Prosecutors highlighted his conviction on 18 counts, including bribery, extortion, wire fraud, and acting as a foreign agent for Egypt. During a 2022 FBI raid, agents uncovered gold bars, nearly $500,000 in cash, and a Mercedes-Benz, allegedly tied to bribes in a scheme involving his wife, Nadine Menendez. Nadine’s own corruption trial is set to begin next Tuesday.

According to sources familiar with the situation, Menendez shifted his focus to Trump after receiving lukewarm responses from Biden’s team. Longtime Biden adviser Steve Ricchetti was reportedly approached about the pardon but remained noncommittal, leaving Menendez doubtful that clemency would come from the current administration.

Why Menendez Views Trump as His Best Bet

With Biden unlikely to intervene, Menendez’s camp believes Trump may be more sympathetic to his case. Insiders say that Menendez sees a greater opportunity for clemency with Trump due to his willingness to challenge the establishment and grant controversial pardons. However, it remains unclear if Trump’s team has formally responded to these overtures.

This isn’t Menendez’s first legal battle. In 2015, he faced federal bribery charges, but the case ended in a mistrial, and the Department of Justice later dropped the charges. The current conviction, however, presents much greater stakes for the disgraced ex-senator.

Growing Fallout and Political Implications

Menendez’s attempts to secure a pardon could have significant political ramifications, especially as Trump’s presidency begins. Critics argue that granting clemency to a convicted senator may send the wrong message about accountability and corruption, while supporters see it as a chance for redemption. Meanwhile, the case continues to cast a shadow over the Democratic Party, raising questions about internal ethics and oversight.
