  • The US has deployed 2,500 additional troops to the border, but experts warn that further intervention could provoke dangerous retaliation, including attacks on American soil.
  • Cartel leaders, like CJNG’s “El Mencho,” are arming themselves with high-caliber weapons to counter Trump’s policies, as tensions and violent clashes continue to rise.

Mexican cartels have escalated tensions at the US-Mexico border, responding to former President Donald Trump’s controversial executive order labeling cartel organizations as foreign terrorist groups. The move, intended to bolster Trump’s renewed crackdown on illegal immigration, has triggered violent clashes and heightened concerns over retaliation on both sides of the border.

Cartels Fire on US Border Agents in Retaliation

Just days after Trump issued the executive order, reports indicate that cartel leaders authorized their members to engage US federal officers. On January 21, suspected cartel gunmen fired on Border Patrol agents in Texas from across the border. The agents returned fire, and a US drone released during the skirmish captured footage of masked individuals shooting at the device. The cross-border violence marks a significant escalation in the deteriorating relationship between US forces and Mexican cartels.

Anna Giaritelli, a reporter for the Washington Examiner, revealed that law enforcement officials confirmed the cartels had issued a “green light” to retaliate. She wrote on X, formerly known as Twitter: “Two LEO officials tell me that the Mexican cartels as of Jan 21 put a ‘green light’ to open fire on US federal law enforcement in retaliation for Trump’s border crackdown.”

In response to the growing unrest, the US Department of Defense has deployed 2,500 active-duty troops to the southern border, representing a 60% increase in personnel. This surge includes intelligence assets and additional air support, underscoring the administration’s commitment to enforcing stricter immigration policies. However, experts caution that any further intervention beyond US borders could have dire consequences.

Lucas Webber, a senior threat intelligence analyst at Tech Against Terrorism, warned that pushing into Mexican territory would provoke dangerous retaliation. “Cartels may strike soft targets like tourists, diplomats, or even US soldiers. They could also use their networks to extend attacks deeper into American territory,” Webber explained. His analysis highlights the risks of escalating military operations in an already volatile region.

Cartels Arm Themselves for Conflict

Notably, Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, known as “El Mencho” and leader of the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG), is reportedly preparing his group for potential conflict. According to journalist and podcaster Anabel Hernández, the CJNG has acquired high-caliber weapons, including RPG missile launchers, to counter Trump’s policies. Hernández also reported that Cervantes plans to convene a high-level meeting with cartel bosses to strategize against perceived threats from US forces.

The CJNG’s preparations come as the Trump administration’s policies threaten to cost cartels billions of dollars annually. With profits at risk, cartels appear ready to use aggressive tactics to defend their operations.

Trump’s executive action has drawn both praise and criticism. Conservative supporters view the designation of cartels as terrorist organizations as a decisive step in combating cross-border crime and illegal immigration. However, critics argue that the move oversimplifies a complex issue and risks unintended consequences.

Experts have voiced concerns about the potential economic impact on US businesses tied to Mexico, as well as the possibility of violent retaliation targeting American interests. The order has also faced backlash from human rights groups, who argue that it unfairly targets immigrants and exacerbates tensions in border communities.

What’s Next for US-Mexico Relations?

The situation at the border remains volatile, with no clear resolution in sight. As the Trump administration ramps up deportations and military presence, the risk of further violence looms large. Experts continue to urge caution, emphasizing the importance of limiting US operations to its own borders to avoid provoking additional attacks.
