The same administration running a 75-country visa crackdown built a fast lane for fans who bought seats, and left everyone else from those countries shut out

NEED TO KNOW

The World Cup opens June 11 with the US hosting roughly three-quarters of all matches

Trump’s immigration restrictions still bar most fans from dozens of banned countries from entering

Yet ticketed fans from several of those same countries are getting visa-bond waivers and a fast lane

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — The 2026 World Cup kicks off Thursday in Mexico City with the US set to host most of the tournament, including the final, even as the administration that lobbied to bring the games home enforces a policy barring many of the fans those games were meant to welcome.

The big picture: The crackdown did not pause for the World Cup. It grew an exception, and who qualifies is the story.

The administration suspended immigrant-visa processing for citizens of 75 countries and bars most fans from banned nations from entering.

It then waived the $15,000 visa bond for ticket-holding fans and opened a FIFA Pass lane for expedited appointments.

The relief reaches fans from countries like Senegal and Côte d’Ivoire, some on the broader restriction lists.

Why it matters: The US wanted the prestige of hosting the world and the politics of keeping much of it out, and the tournament forces both into the same stadium.

An estimated 6.5 million fans are expected across the three hosts, with the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics next on the US calendar.

Allies’ former officials, including ex-FIFA president Sepp Blatter, urged fans to avoid the US.

Driving the news: The agency many fans fear is also the one helping run the event’s security.

SoFi Stadium workers authorized a strike days before the US opener, then reached a tentative deal Monday night.

FIFA and the stadium declined the union’s request to bar ICE; workers say they will not show if agents are present, distrusting the DHS line that ICE is there only for security, not civil enforcement.

What they’re saying: The administration frames the loosening as hospitality; workers frame the enforcement as a threat.

A DHS spokesperson — “President Trump is focused on ensuring that this is not only an incredible experience for all fans and visitors, but also the safest and most secure in history.”

Kurt Petersen, UNITE HERE Local 11 — workers should not have to “choose between showing up and being kidnapped by ICE.”

Yes, but: The carveouts are real relief, not just optics, and they cut against the claim the administration wants to keep the world out entirely.

The bond waiver and FIFA Pass measurably ease travel for fans who clear the ticket bar.

Athletes, coaches, and relatives were exempted by proclamation, keeping Iran and Haiti in.

Between the lines: A policy sold as having no exceptions just published its exceptions, and the line it drew is a purchased ticket. The same Haitian or Senegalese national barred from a tourist visa can enter holding a match seat, while the general ban and the end of Temporary Protected Status for 340,000 Haitians stay in force. The tournament did not soften the policy. It revealed who it was always willing to bend for.

The right will not call a ticket-gated waiver a loophole in a “no exceptions” rule.

The left will not credit a loosening that complicates the story of a uniform crackdown.

What’s next: The opening whistle turns an abstract policy into a turnstile test.

The US team’s June 12 SoFi opener against Paraguay is the first live read on the ICE-access question.

The tournament joins prior TDR coverage of the World Cup’s collision with US policy through the July 19 final.

If a country waives its own immigration rules for fans who bought a ticket, what does that say the rules were ever about?

A Nazi tattoo, abuse allegations, and old posts would have ended a candidate a decade ago; Maine Democrats handed him 78% anyway

NEED TO KNOW

Graham Platner won Maine’s Democratic Senate primary with 77.7% of the vote, a roughly 61-point margin

He carried that margin while weathering a Nazi-linked tattoo, abuse allegations, and resurfaced posts

Party strategists now fear the nominee they got is the one least able to beat Susan Collins

BLUE HILL, ME (TDR) — Progressive oyster farmer Graham Platner won Maine’s Democratic Senate primary Tuesday, taking nearly 78% of the vote despite a campaign battered by scandal, and set up a November challenge to five-term Republican Sen. Susan Collins in the party’s best pickup state.

The big picture: The result inverts the usual rule that opposition research ends campaigns, and it did so by a margin too large to call a fluke.

Platner finished with 77.7% to Gov. Janet Mills’ 16.7%, with David Costello at 5.6%.

The Associated Press called the race shortly after polls closed, with single-digit precincts reporting.

Mills, the establishment choice recruited by Chuck Schumer, suspended her campaign in April but stayed on the ballot.

Why it matters: Maine is rated Democrats’ strongest Senate pickup opportunity, and the party just chose its highest-variance option to contest it.

Control of the chamber could turn on whether Platner can convert a primary base into a general majority.

Collins, seeking a sixth term, has survived every cycle Democrats predicted would end her.

A loss in Maine would close Democrats’ clearest path to flipping the Senate.

Driving the news: The week before the vote was dominated by Platner’s record, not his platform, and primary voters rewarded him anyway.

Reporting surfaced a Nazi-linked tattoo Platner has since covered, old Reddit posts, and abuse allegations from former partners, atop earlier comments appearing to endorse political violence.

Platner cast the revelations as opponents burying a working-class agenda, while Bernie Sanders urged focus on “working families,” not his personal life.

What they’re saying: The win produced confidence at the top of the party and quiet dread beneath it.

Chuck Schumer and Kirsten Gillibrand, in a joint statement — “In November, Maine voters will elect Graham Platner, and we will win a Senate majority.”

Daniel Moraff, the activist who recruited him — “People do not want their candidates grown in vats, they want people who are real human beings.”

Yes, but: A primary electorate is not a general electorate, and the same record that read as authenticity in June can read as disqualifying in November.

Platner ran up his margin against a governor who had already quit the race, inflating the signal of his dominance.

Pre-primary polling gave him only a single-digit edge over Collins, well inside the range a fall oppo blitz could erase.

Between the lines: The “man of the people” was recruited into the lane he ran in. Local reporting shows Platner was a genuine organizer and town harbormaster before any operative called, but it was strategists Daniel Moraff and Leanne Fan who approached him about Collins, the same network that produced Nebraska’s Dan Osborn.

Their vetting missed the chest tattoo and caught only some of the posts that later defined the race.

Voters who rewarded the outsider brand were responding to a brand built for that response.

What’s next: The general now tests whether a primary asset survives a wider audience.

Collins, unchallenged Tuesday, now faces Platner directly in a race rated a toss-up.

National Democrats must decide how much to invest in a nominee their strategists privately question.

The race joins a 2026 map where both parties have nominated high-risk candidates in seats they cannot afford to lose.

If a candidate’s worst material becomes proof he’s the real thing, what’s left for either party to vet for, and who decides when a scandal is disqualifying?

The scariest CPI number in three years is almost entirely an oil story, and the engine under it is already losing steam

NEED TO KNOW

Headline inflation hit 4.2% in May, the highest since April 2023 and the third straight monthly climb

Gasoline jumped 40.5% from a year earlier, with energy accounting for over 60% of the monthly gain

Monthly core inflation came in at just 0.2%, below the 0.3% forecast, the part no one is leading with

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — Consumer prices rose 4.2% over the year in May, the first time the headline rate has crossed 4% in three years, even as the underlying measure economists watch most closely cooled below what forecasters expected.

The big picture: The number that will dominate headlines is an energy number, and the spike driving it is already reversing in real time.

The annual rate has climbed every month since January’s 2.4%, reaching a three-year high entirely during the Iran war’s energy disruption.

Energy accounted for more than 60% of May’s monthly increase, with fuel oil up 58.9% on the year.

Gas has eased in early June, a decline that will not appear until next month’s report.

Why it matters: The gap between a 4.2% topline and a 0.2% monthly core is the difference between a price problem and a pump problem.

Real, inflation-adjusted wages are now falling at roughly a 0.8% annual rate.

Food rose 3.1% and shelter 3.4%, the costs that do not reverse when oil does.

The Strait of Hormuz disruption has rippled past gasoline into airfares and freight.

Driving the news: Beneath the headline, the report carried a quieter signal that complicates the panic.

Monthly headline CPI rose 0.5%, cooler than April’s 0.6%.

Monthly core CPI rose just 0.2%, under the 0.3% economists forecast and down from 0.4% in April.

Annual core ticked to 2.9%, but its month-to-month slowing is the trend that matters for policy.

What they’re saying: The split in the data has produced a split in interpretation.

Mark Zandi, chief economist at Moody’s Analytics — “At this point, I suspect they just stay on hold.”

Kevin Warsh, Fed chair — “Inflation is a choice, and the Fed must take responsibility for it.”

Yes, but: The case that this is a fading supply shock leans on a ceasefire that has not held cleanly.

Core may be cooling monthly, but annual core at 2.9% is still its highest since September and above target.

If Hormuz disruptions resume, the transitory read collapses and the topline becomes the trend.

Between the lines: A 4.2% print that is mostly gasoline is politically useful to everyone, which is exactly why no one in power wants to explain it accurately. The administration’s critics get a three-year-high number to brandish; the administration gets to blame a foreign war it frames as out of its hands. The soft core that would complicate both stories sits in the same release, unmentioned by either.

Naming the energy share honestly would force critics to concede underlying inflation is behaving.

It would also force the White House to own that the war it is prosecuting is the proximate cause.

What’s next: The report lands days before the Fed’s first meeting under new leadership.

The FOMC meets June 16-17, Warsh’s first as chair after taking the helm May 22.

Markets price roughly a 70% chance of a rate hike by December and near-zero odds of a cut, even as President Trump presses for lower rates.

Whether Warsh treats May’s topline as signal or noise sets the tone, a test the bond market began running last month.

When the scariest number in a report is the one most likely to reverse, should a central bank act on what voters feel at the pump or on what the data says underneath it?

President Trump is calling for Senate Parliamentarian Elizabeth MacDonough to be fired after she blocked parts of the GOP reconciliation package, including funding priorities backed by the White House. But Senate Majority Leader John Thune isn’t budging, defending the parliamentarian’s role as a neutral referee. The clash exposes growing tensions between Trump’s agenda and Senate procedure as Republicans push major legislation through Congress.

Court Blocks Trump’s $100K H-1B Fee as a Rival Ruling Stands

A Massachusetts judge struck the fee as an illegal tax. A D.C. judge already upheld it. Now an appeals court decides which one holds.

NEED TO KNOW

Federal judge in Boston voided Trump’s $100K H-1B fee as an unauthorized tax

A D.C. judge upheld the same fee in December — the rulings now directly conflict

A fast-tracked appeal and two more lawsuits leave the fee’s fate unsettled

BOSTON, MA (TDR) — A federal judge struck down President Trump’s $100,000 fee on new H-1B visa applications on Monday, ruling the charge is a tax Congress never authorized the executive to impose.

The big picture: Two federal courts have looked at the same proclamation and reached opposite conclusions. The fight is no longer about whether the fee survives — it’s about which ruling an appeals court lets stand.

Judge Leo Sorokin sided with 20 Democratic-led states, finding the substance of the payment makes it a tax regardless of its label

He leaned on the 2012 Supreme Court ruling upholding the Affordable Care Act mandate as a tax, turning a conservative-era precedent against the administration

Why it matters: The H-1B program is the main pipeline for high-skilled foreign hiring, and the fee reshapes who can afford it.

Employers typically paid $2,000 to $5,000 per petition before the proclamation; the new charge is up to 50 times that

The chilling effect is measurable: only 85 payments had been collected by mid-February

Indian nationals and U.S. tech firms absorb the bulk, with some companies shifting staff toward green cards

Driving the news: Trump issued the fee by proclamation in September 2025, framing it as a fix for the “large-scale replacement of American workers.”

The administration argued the payment was a lawful penalty under the president’s power to restrict entry of foreign nationals

Its main argument was that the court had no authority to review the fee. It lost.

What they’re saying: The same proclamation drew opposite readings from two Obama-appointed judges.

Leo Sorokin, U.S. District Judge (Massachusetts) — “The payment is not a penalty, just as the IRS fee in Sebelius was not”

Beryl Howell, U.S. District Judge (D.C.) — Congress granted broad statutory authority the president used to address “a problem he perceives to be a matter of economic and national security”

Daryl Joseffer, U.S. Chamber of Commerce EVP — the fee makes H-1B visas cost prohibitive for the businesses Congress meant the program to serve

Yes, but: Both tribes are claiming a clean win neither ruling delivers. The states celebrating today won on a taxing-power theory, not on protecting workers, and the same logic that voids the fee concedes Trump could likely restrict the program another way.

Howell found Trump adequately documented firms that laid off Americans while petitioning for H-1B workers

The “protect American jobs” framing collides with its own coalition: the Chamber of Commerce, a reliable GOP ally, leads the fight against the fee

Neither ruling answers whether the program helps or replaces U.S. workers. Both dodge the merits for procedure

Between the lines: This was never going to settle at the district level. With trial courts split on identical facts, the fast-tracked D.C. Circuit appeal becomes the real decision point — and the appeal’s signatories include conservative legal icon Paul Clement, the coalition fracture made literal. A clean split is the kind of disagreement the Supreme Court exists to resolve.

What’s next:

The administration said it will appeal Sorokin’s ruling, opening a second circuit-level fight

A third challenge from a nurse-recruitment coalition is pending in California, widening the field

Employers remain in limbo on pending petitions until an appeals court, or the Supreme Court, speaks

If a president can price a visa out of reach but can’t tax it, where exactly is the line between restricting entry and raising revenue — and who gets to draw it?

An Ohio takedown shows proven theft where USDA got state records; the headline national figure rests on data the agency admits it can't verify — and 21 states are fighting in court to keep it that way.

NEED TO KNOW

USDA and Ohio issued violation notices to 19 SNAP retailers for trafficking benefits for cash, alcohol and tobacco.

The “$10 billion nationwide” fraud figure is extrapolated from data USDA concedes it cannot verify.

Twenty-one states are suing to block USDA’s demand for five years of recipients’ personal data.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — The Trump administration’s SNAP fraud crackdown rests on a split the headlines blur: hard enforcement cases where states handed over data, and a sweeping national estimate built where they didn’t.

🚨 Ohio exposed how much fraud can hide in plain sight when government agencies refuse to connect the dots.

President Trump and @DAGToddBlanche are bringing the political will.

Any governor who keeps the books closed is choosing the fraudsters. pic.twitter.com/Jivlj4SxT5

— Mehek Cooke🇺🇸 (@MehekCooke) June 6, 2026

The big picture: On June 3 and 4, USDA’s renamed Food and Nutrition Administration and Ohio’s Investigative Unit issued violation notices to 19 retailers. The cases are specific and documented. The same week, USDA’s secretary projected a national fraud figure many times larger, drawn from incomplete data and openly acknowledged as unverified.

The Ohio action named retailers in Cleveland, Cincinnati and Columbus accused of exchanging benefits for cash, beer and tobacco.

It landed alongside a broader Ohio anti-fraud push touching Medicaid and other programs.

A separate review flagged roughly $13.3 million in potential Ohio fraud.

Why it matters: SNAP feeds about 41 million people and costs nearly $100 billion a year, so the gap between proven theft and projected theft shapes how much benefit-cutting the numbers can justify.

USDA’s integrity team reported $3 billion a year in potential fraud, waste and abuse from 29 states that shared data.

Secretary Brooke Rollins extrapolated that to more than $10 billion nationwide.

Driving the news: The data fight escalated into court the same week as the Ohio takedown.

A federal judge blocked some of the administration’s SNAP conditions tied to the crackdown.

USDA’s inspector general subpoenaed four states, including California and Illinois, for SNAP data.

What they’re saying: Both sides claim the other is hiding something.

Brooke Rollins, USDA Secretary — “Every figure from years past is meaningless,” arguing USDA never had state data until this administration demanded it.

The Food Research and Action Center warned the demand for five years of personal data threatens recipient privacy and program trust.

Twenty-one states argued in California v. Rollins that USDA skipped mandatory Privacy Act protocols.

Yes, but: The honest version of this story embarrasses both sides at once.

The proven cases are real theft — Ohio’s trafficking charges and a $2.8 million Florida scheme are not “messaging,” and dismissing them as politics lets actual fraud slide.

Yet the headline national number is a political projection, not a finding, built on data the secretary herself says she cannot confirm.

Between the lines: The unstated fight is over what “fraud” data is allowed to cost. The administration frames data-sharing as basic oversight of a $100 billion program. The resisting states frame it as a privacy breach tied to a broader push, rooted in a March executive order on eliminating “information silos,” that critics link to immigration enforcement. Neither frame is the whole truth: oversight of taxpayer money is legitimate, and so is the question of whether handing Washington five years of personal records on 41 million people is the only way to get it. The number nobody can produce yet is how much of the projected fraud would survive an audit the resisting states will allow.

What’s next:

Watch the California v. Rollins litigation and whether the subpoenas force compliance or more court fights.

Track whether USDA releases a verified national figure rather than an extrapolation.

Monitor Ohio’s chip-card and card-lock rollout as a model other states may copy.

If catching real fraud requires handing Washington five years of personal records on 41 million people, is that a price worth paying — and who decides?

A legitimate, predictable ballot tally has flipped second place to the progressive — and handed every distrust narrative a week of open runway.

NEED TO KNOW

Nithya Raman has pulled ahead of Spencer Pratt by under a point for the LA mayoral runoff’s second slot.

The lead materialized only as late mail ballots were counted, days after election night.

California’s count is legitimate and routine — and its own governor says the delay breeds suspicion.

LOS ANGELES, CA (TDR) — City Councilmember Nithya Raman has overtaken former reality-TV star Spencer Pratt for second place in the Los Angeles mayoral primary, reversing his election-night lead as late ballots are counted.

DSA-backed Nithya Raman has surged into second place in the LA mayoral race after days of vote counting, passing Spencer Pratt.

President Trump looked visibly frustrated during an NBC interview when California’s elections came up.

Why? Because this isn’t just about California.… pic.twitter.com/tSp9DZ2uIm

— GRANDPA’s FREE ADVICE (@GOP_is_Gutless) June 8, 2026

The big picture: Mayor Karen Bass already advanced to the November runoff. The remaining fight is for the second slot opposite her, and it flipped only after days of tabulation. Pratt led on election night; by the weekend, Raman had pulled ahead. Nothing irregular happened. That is precisely what makes the moment combustible.

Raman leads with roughly 27.1% to Pratt’s 26.7%, about 3,000 votes, with 83% counted.

Days earlier, Pratt held a near-6% advantage before the margin eroded.

Why it matters: A reversal driven entirely by legitimate late ballots is the exact pattern that primes voters to suspect the result, regardless of party.

California mails a ballot to all 23 million registered voters and counts those postmarked by Election Day arriving within seven days.

Counties have up to 30 days to finish; final results are due July 3.

Roughly 463,000 ballots remained uncounted as the lead changed hands.

Driving the news: The shift played out as a national fight over the pace of the count.

President Trump said his DOJ was investigating the delay, posting “Why the vote counting DELAY???”

Pratt, watching his lead shrink, posted a meme of a man straining to make sense of the count.

What they’re saying: Election experts and the state’s own leadership frame the slowness as both lawful and a liability.

Paul Mitchell, Political Data Inc. — “It looks like it takes forever because it does.”

Gov. Gavin Newsom urged counties to count every lawful ballot quickly, warning that the gap lets disinformation spread.

A CNN analysis noted Democratic voters returned ballots more slowly, explaining the late progressive surge.

Yes, but: Both halves of the distrust fight are standing on something real, and neither will say so.

The count is legitimate. Late-counted ballots are not fraud, and a lead that grows as they are tallied is a documented pattern, not a heist.

Yet a system that takes weeks and routinely reverses election-night leads is, by its own governor’s admission, an opacity problem the state has chosen and underfunded — handing bad-faith actors a real grievance to exploit.

Between the lines: The uncomfortable truth neither side states is that “legitimate” and “trust-eroding” are not opposites here. A process can be entirely lawful and still be designed in a way that manufactures suspicion every cycle. The fraud claims are unsupported — but the impulse behind them is fed by a genuine feature of California’s system, not invented from nothing. Defending the count’s integrity and defending its current design are two different arguments, and conflating them is how both tribes talk past each other.

What’s next:

Watch whether Raman’s lead holds or widens as remaining ballots are processed toward the July 3 deadline.

Track whether the DOJ delay probe produces anything beyond the posted complaint.

Monitor legislative proposals to fund faster counting ahead of November.

If a vote count is both completely legitimate and predictably breeds distrust every cycle, whose job is it to fix the part that isn’t the fraud?

A ceasefire one side calls enforcement and the other calls aggression has no neutral monitor left to settle the difference.

NEED TO KNOW

Lebanon’s PM counts 3,491 Israeli air raids since the April 17 cessation took hold.

Hezbollah, accused of breaching, never signed the deal and openly rejected it.

The UN force meant to verify compliance is being wound down by year’s end.

BEIRUT, LB (TDR) — Lebanon’s Prime Minister Nawaf Salam says Israel has carried out 3,491 air raids, 407 bombings, and six village-flattening operations between April 17 and June 7 — a period both governments have called a ceasefire.

'What we've seen in the last 24 hours is how closely linked Lebanon is to the wider ceasefire.'

Sky's @sallylockwood reports from Dubai on how military action by Hezbollah and Israel triggered renewed strikes between Iran and Israel.

The big picture: Salam delivered the tally after a cabinet meeting, framing every strike as a violation. Israel frames the same strikes as enforcement against a militia that won’t stand down. The dispute is not over what happened — the numbers are largely agreed — but over who broke a truce that one of the central armed parties never accepted.

Salam’s office reported 3,526 people killed and 10,733 wounded over the period.

The cessation followed the US-Iran ceasefire that took effect April 17, after Hezbollah reopened fire on March 2.

Why it matters: More than one million people — a fifth of Lebanon’s population — have been displaced, and the country says it has hit its limit.

Lebanon has reached maximum absorption capacity in Beirut, Sidon, and other host cities, Salam said.

The UN human rights office found Israel’s evacuation orders cover roughly 14 percent of Lebanese territory and may amount to forced displacement.

UN agencies are sheltering more than 215,000 displaced people across over 500 sites.

Driving the news: A Washington-brokered deal announced June 4 was supposed to formalize the truce. It hinged on Hezbollah halting fire and pulling back from the south Litani sector.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem rejected the proposal the same day, calling it a deal that serves the enemy’s aims.

Israeli jets struck Beirut’s Dahiyeh suburb June 7, the first capital strike since the renewed truce, after rocket fire Israel attributed to Hezbollah.

What they’re saying: Each side reads the same ceasefire text as licensing the opposite conduct.

Naim Qassem, Hezbollah leader — “We are concerned only with a comprehensive cessation of aggression, a ceasefire, and the withdrawal of Israel.”

An Israeli military spokesperson warned southern residents the IDF would continue to target Hezbollah facilities in their villages.

Israel’s defense minister said displaced residents will not return south of the Litani until northern Israel is secure.

Yes, but: Every party to this is standing on a claim that doesn’t survive contact with the others.

Hezbollah calls the strikes aggression against a ceasefire — yet it rejected the deal it accuses Israel of violating and kept firing.

Israel calls 3,491 strikes enforcement, but there is no neutral body authorized to confirm which targets were actual violations versus civilian sites.

Lebanon’s own army is taking casualties from a truce its government cannot enforce on the militia operating inside its borders.

Between the lines: The structural problem is that the only referees are leaving the field. The US and France brokered compliance monitoring, but the UN peacekeeping force that physically verifies the south Litani line has a mandate ending December 31, 2026. Without an independent monitor, “violation” and “enforcement” become whatever the stronger party says — and a ceasefire becomes a label, not a constraint.

The bottom line: When no neutral party can adjudicate a breach, both sides claim the law is on their side, and the people counting the dead are the same ones who can’t stop the strikes.

What’s next:

Watch whether the June 4 framework collapses or holds after the Dahiyeh strike escalation.

Track UNIFIL’s drawdown timeline and whether any body replaces its monitoring role.

Monitor displacement figures as Beirut and Sidon pass stated capacity.

If neither side will accept an outside referee, what stops “ceasefire” from meaning whatever the side with more firepower decides it means?

President Trump says any peace deal with Iran will be on his terms, declaring, “I call all the shots,” and insisting Israel will have to accept the agreement. After Iran fired missiles at Israel, Trump reportedly urged Netanyahu not to retaliate, saying a deal could be reached within days.
A whistleblower says officials weighed marking 2.7 million living people dead — and the database makes it possible.

NEED TO KNOW

Whistleblower alleges a plan to falsely list 2.7M living people as dead

The Death Master File can sever pay, bank access, and benefits instantly

SSA denies the mass change happened; Senate Democrats want answers

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — A former Social Security executive alleges the Trump administration weighed declaring 2.7 million living people dead to pressure immigrants into leaving the country, according to a whistleblower complaint reviewed by the Washington Post.

The big picture: The allegation lands inside a documented pattern of the government’s death database being treated as a deportation lever rather than a recordkeeping tool.

Jeremiah Schofield, a 25-year agency veteran who helped run IT modernization, says the plan tied to Elon Musk’s DOGE initiative was never executed but was seriously discussed.

His 49-page disclosure went to the Senate, not an anonymous tip line.

Why it matters: The Death Master File is a single, mutable record with outsized power over a person’s ability to function financially.

Being listed as dead can cut off wages, bank accounts, credit, and benefits with no court order and no notice.

Schofield’s spot-check of 25 names from the list found only living people: citizens, green-card holders, teenagers, seniors, including a widow drawing survivor benefits.

Driving the news: This is not the first time the file has been used this way.

Last year the agency added more than 6,000 living immigrants to the database.

Some of those people showed up at SSA offices to prove they were alive.

A separate complaint alleges a DOGE engineer walked out with the Numident and Death Master File on a thumb drive after leaving the agency.

What they’re saying: The accounts diverge sharply on whether anything was carried out.

Jeremiah Schofield, former SSA executive — “That call was one of the most disappointing calls I’ve been in in my 25-year career. I was shocked.”

SSA spokesperson — the agency “did not add a list of 2.7 million names to the Death Master File” and maintains strict safeguards.

Yes, but: The plan was not executed, and the agency’s flat denial is on the record — Schofield’s account of intent rests on what he says he heard in meetings, not a completed action. SSA has previously said named parties strongly refuted related DOGE-data claims, and a lawyer for one named official says his client knew nothing of the proposal. The complaint is single-origin until the Senate review tests it.

Between the lines: Both tribes are misreading the same fact. The right frames death-file edits as fraud-hunting; the left frames them as cruelty. Neither names the structural problem: a single editable database can remove a living citizen from the financial system without due process, and the only thing standing between policy and a wrongful erasure is the judgment of whoever has write access. The 6,100 already marked dead prove the mechanism works whether the intent is fraud or pressure.

What’s next:

Senators have sent letters to the SSA and the named ex-DOGE officials; the SSA inspector general is reviewing the disclosure.

This follows a 2025 push in which a dozen senators demanded a watchdog probe of “financial murder” — the same mechanism, smaller scale.

DHS defended broad data-sharing in general terms but did not address the specific plan.

Should any single database be able to erase a living person from the economy without a court ever weighing in?

The acting attorney general said the fund was dead. The president said "I love it." The Senate is voting anyway.

NEED TO KNOW

Senate Republicans, not just Democrats, are pushing to permanently block Trump’s $1.8B fund.

Trump revived it Wednesday, days after his own acting AG pledged to drop it.

A federal judge had already paused the fund pending an inquiry.

WASHINGTON, DC (TDR) — President Trump publicly endorsed a $1.8 billion Justice Department payout fund on Wednesday that his own acting attorney general had pledged days earlier to abandon, as the Senate moved to bar it permanently.

The big picture: The fund has produced a rare alignment: a Republican president on one side, much of his own party on the other.

Acting AG Todd Blanche testified the administration was “not moving forward with the fund,” per CBS News.

Trump called it “a beautiful thing” and said “I love it,” per MSNBC.

GOP Sens. Thom Tillis and Bill Cassidy filed amendments to block it during the Senate’s vote-a-rama, CBS reported.

Why it matters: The fund would route taxpayer money to people claiming government “weaponization,” potentially including pardoned Jan. 6 defendants.

It emerged from Trump’s lawsuit settlement with the IRS over leaked tax records, per NOTUS.

Roughly 400 pardoned Jan. 6 participants are seeking $1 million to $10 million each, per Sen. Whitehouse’s office.

Five administrators appointed by the attorney general would decide payouts, PBS reported.

Driving the news: The fight reignited as the Senate processed Trump’s stalled immigration bill.

The fund had derailed the GOP’s $70 billion ICE package and blown Trump’s June 1 deadline, per CNN.

The Senate advanced the bill 53-46 only after the fund was stripped, per Roll Call.

Tillis and Cassidy, both retiring, have been freer to break with the party, CBS noted.

What they’re saying: The sharpest language is coming from inside Trump’s own party.

Sen. Thom Tillis, R-N.C. — the fund is “stupid on stilts,” and taking taxpayer money for it “is tyranny,” via The Daily Signal.

Sen. Bill Cassidy, R-La. — “you want to make sure it’s really dead,” he told NOTUS.

Sen. Susan Collins, R-Maine — those convicted of violence against police on Jan. 6 should not get “reimbursement of their legal fees,” via CNN.

Yes, but: Democrats are not pure good-government actors here. The vote-a-rama lets the minority force unlimited amendments, and they are using the fund to drive a midterm wedge through the GOP, a political weapon as much as an oversight tool. Tillis flagged exactly that, saying he wanted the effort “led by Republicans for Republicans,” not “some Democratic initiative,” per NOTUS.

Between the lines: No one can say whether the fund is actually dead, because the president and his Justice Department are describing different realities. Blanche told Congress it was over but refused to put the pledge in writing; Trump then praised it and, asked if it was dead, said he’d “have to ask the lawyers.” That gap is why Republican senators distrust a verbal assurance and want statutory language. The fund is being killed not by the opposition but by the president’s own side refusing to take his word.

What’s next: The outcome rests on a procedural fight, not a clean vote.

Majority Leader John Thune stripped DOJ funding from the bill, which could let leadership defeat the amendments as non-germane, per Roll Call.

Schumer said Democrats will push a standalone bill because “Trump’s word is nowhere near enough,” per Time.

A federal judge already paused the fund and opened an inquiry, per Time.

If a president’s own party won’t take his word that a fund is dead, what does an assurance from this White House actually guarantee?

A US-brokered deal binds a government and a state — but not the armed group still doing the fighting.

NEED TO KNOW

Israel and Lebanon’s government agreed to renew a US-brokered ceasefire on Wednesday.

Hezbollah, the group actually fighting, was not a party and rejected it outright.

Strikes killed civilians and a UN peacekeeper hours after the deal was announced.

BEIRUT (TDR) — Hezbollah on Thursday rejected the renewed ceasefire that Israel and the Lebanese government agreed to a day earlier, exposing the gap at the center of the deal: the combatant doing the fighting was never bound by it.

The big picture: The agreement is between two governments that do not recognize each other, brokered by Washington, and aimed at a militant group that sat outside the room.

The joint US-Israel-Lebanon statement announced the renewal Wednesday, per Al Jazeera.

It does not officially include Hezbollah and bans the group from “pilot” security zones, NBC News reported.

The terms label Hezbollah an “enemy” and call for dismantling it, per an AP carrier.

Why it matters: A ceasefire that excludes the active belligerent is a diplomatic announcement, not a stop to the shooting.

Israeli strikes killed at least four people hours after the deal, per AP via Local 10; Al Jazeera put the toll at 10.

A UN peacekeeper was killed by mortar fire in southeastern Lebanon, NPR reported.

More than 2,000 people have died in Lebanon and over a million displaced since the war, per Wikipedia’s conflict record.

Driving the news: The deal asks the Lebanese army to do what it has never managed: control Hezbollah’s territory.

Lebanese forces would take “exclusive control” of pilot zones, excluding all non-state actors, per Al Jazeera.

The agreement follows Israel’s deepest incursion into Lebanon in over 25 years, per an AP explainer.

Implementation timing rests with Washington and Trump directly, Aoun told reporters.

What they’re saying: Each party is describing a different agreement.

Lebanese President Joseph Aoun — the deal is “the last chance to enter a final and comprehensive ceasefire,” via KPBS.

Hezbollah leader Naim Qassem — the demand to leave under fire means “surrender, defeat and achieving the enemy’s goals,” per the AP report.

Qassem also called it “a roadmap to annihilate part of the Lebanese people,” per Axios.

Yes, but: The deal is not empty theater. It marks the first time Lebanon’s government has signed terms that explicitly target Hezbollah’s disarmament, and Aoun is staking his authority on enforcing it — a real break from a state that has long deferred to the group. Whether Beirut can deliver is the open question, but the willingness to sign is itself a shift, per the AP explainer.

Between the lines: The unstated fact is that Lebanon’s government cannot deliver what it signed. Aoun put his name to a deal requiring the Lebanese army to disarm a force that has outgunned that army for decades, then said implementation depends on responses from “relevant factions” — meaning the very group that just refused. The ceasefire effectively asks Hezbollah to consent to its own dismantling, and calls the resulting refusal a Hezbollah problem rather than a structural one. That framing lets every other party claim good faith while the shooting continues.

What’s next: The deal hinges on a faction that has already said no.

Aoun said Lebanon will relay Hezbollah’s position to Washington and implement once guarantees are received, per Axios.

The fighting threatens parallel efforts to wind down the broader Iran war, NPR reported.

Netanyahu, facing elections this year, has signaled he will press the offensive until Hezbollah is neutralized, per NBC News.

NEED TO KNOW

Richard Gere criticized President Trump at the Oslo Freedom Forum Tuesday

He spoke while presenting the Václav Havel Prize for Creative Dissent

No response to the remarks has been issued by the White House

OSLO, NO (TDR) — Actor Richard Gere criticized President Donald Trump during an appearance at the Oslo Freedom Forum in Norway on Tuesday.

The big picture: Richard Gere is a longtime human rights activist whose advocacy spans decades, and his Oslo appearance placed his political commentary alongside an annual award for imprisoned dissidents and artists.

The 76-year-old actor is known for films including “Pretty Woman” and “An Officer and a Gentleman.”

He is a longtime advocate for Tibetan human rights and has spoken at international forums on migration and refugees.

He has publicly criticized the president before, including remarks reported by the Washington Times at past events.

The Oslo Freedom Forum is an annual gathering focused on democracy and human rights, drawing activists and public figures worldwide.

Driving the news: Gere spoke in conversation with Human Rights Foundation head Thor Halvorssen and used the platform to deliver pointed criticism of the president, according to reporting from the event.

He described the current period as the darkest he has experienced, per Japan Today.

Gere said the president had dismantled U.S. institutions early in the term, the outlet reported.

He attributed the political climate partly to voter apathy, citing people who did not engage or vote.

Gere said he had recently visited the site of the former Nazi concentration camp at Dachau, per reporting on the speech.

What they’re saying: Quotes from the event center on Gere’s remarks, with the forum context framing the award presentation.

Richard Gere, Actor — “We’re living in the darkest moment that I’ve experienced on this planet.”

Richard Gere, Actor — “How is this even possible? Because we went to sleep. We didn’t care. We didn’t vote.”

The White House had not issued a public response to the remarks as of filing.

Yes, but: The remarks drew sharply divided media coverage across the political spectrum.

Some outlets characterized the speech as a forceful condemnation, while others framed it critically.

Gere acknowledged he had done too little to campaign against the president’s return, per reporting.

He has no formal role in U.S. policy, and the speech was delivered at a private forum abroad.

By the numbers:

Gere is 76 years old.

The Václav Havel Prize was established in 2012 by the Human Rights Foundation.

This year’s prize recognized two recipients.

What’s next:

The Václav Havel Prize recipients include imprisoned Chinese artist Gao Zhen and Myanmar activist Sai.

Gao Zhen remains imprisoned in China on charges related to his artwork, according to reporting on the award.

The Oslo Freedom Forum continues its annual programming on democracy and rights.

Video of Gere’s full remarks was posted by the forum’s official channel.

House Rebukes Trump on Iran War as GOP Crossovers Cite Gas Prices

A constitutional vote, on the record, driven by the price of diesel.

NEED TO KNOW

House passed an Iran war powers resolution 215–208, four Republicans crossing.

Crossovers split on why: one cited the Constitution, one cited $5 gas.

Whether it binds Trump is disputed; the Senate and courts decide next.

WASHINGTON (TDR) — The House voted Wednesday to rein in President Trump’s authority to keep striking Iran, the first time either chamber has cleared such a measure on a final vote. The 215–208 tally is being framed as a constitutional stand. The Republicans who made it possible did not all agree that’s what it was.

The big picture: Four Republicans crossed party lines to join every Democrat on the war powers resolution, the clearest legislative pushback yet on a war now past 90 days.

The crossovers were Reps. Thomas Massie, Brian Fitzpatrick, Tom Barrett, and Warren Davidson, named by Time.

It marked the first time the chamber moved to force an end to the conflict; this was the fourth attempt this year, the most recent a 212–212 tie.

Why it matters: The vote’s framing, Congress reclaiming war authority, sits uneasily next to why the holdouts actually moved.

GOP support climbed as constituents absorbed rising prices of oil, gas, and commodities tied to the war.

The war began Feb. 28; hours before the vote, Iran and the US traded strikes in the Persian Gulf.

Driving the news: The two stories told about the same vote diverged immediately.

Massie grounded his vote in economics: voters are “tired of $5 gallon gas and $6 gallon diesel, and fertilizer we can’t afford to put on our fields in Kentucky.” He posted on X that the People’s House was sending a message to end the war.

Fitzpatrick grounded his in law, telling colleagues there’s a law on the books and the chamber must check an administration that doesn’t follow the Constitution. Trump attacked the four by name Thursday morning.

What they’re saying: Even the people who agreed on the vote disagreed on its meaning.

Thomas Massie, Rep. (R-KY) — “People are tired of this. They’re tired of $5 gallon gas and $6 gallon diesel.”

Brian Fitzpatrick, Rep. (R-PA) — “We must keep the world safe, and we must also follow the law.”

Mike Johnson, House Speaker (R-LA) — the measure would “weaken” Trump’s hand in Iran negotiations.

Yes, but: Whether any of this constrains Trump is unsettled. The measure is a concurrent resolution, and the Senate’s own guidance says such resolutions don’t carry the force of law. Democrats counter it binds once both chambers adopt it and that courts would settle the dispute. The administration questions whether the War Powers Act itself is constitutional. A “rebuke” everyone reads differently may constrain nothing.

Between the lines: Both tribes are selling a clean story the vote won’t support. The left wants a principled stand for congressional war authority, but the GOP votes that delivered it were bought by diesel prices, not the Constitution — and one crossover said so on the record. The right wants to call it reckless grandstanding, but its own members cited a law on the books. The honest read is less flattering to either side: a war loses political cover not when it’s judged unconstitutional, but when it gets expensive enough that voters notice. Eighteen GOP absences, not a wave of conviction, helped clear the margin.

What’s next:

The resolution heads to the Republican-led Senate, which has advanced its own version but not held a final vote.

Even passage in both chambers sets up a veto and a court fight over whether the resolution carries legal force.

If a war only loses political support once gas hits $5, was the objection ever really about the Constitution?

A deal contingent on Hezbollah was signed by parties who can't deliver Hezbollah.

NEED TO KNOW

Israel and Lebanon agreed to a ceasefire contingent on Hezbollah halting all fire.

Hezbollah rejects the talks; Iran says any Beirut strike resumes full-scale war.

Israel kept striking the south hours after signing; next talks set for June 22.

WASHINGTON (TDR) — Israel and Lebanon agreed Wednesday to implement a conditional ceasefire whose central requirement depends on a party that was never in the room. The deal hinges on a “complete cessation” of fire by Hezbollah, the Iran-backed group that rejects the direct talks and has not agreed to anything.

The big picture: The agreement emerged from a fourth round of US-mediated negotiations in Washington since fighting reignited March 2. The two governments, which hold no formal diplomatic relations, signed a framework. The fighter on whom it depends did not.

The joint statement makes the truce “contingent on a complete cessation” of Hezbollah fire and the group’s evacuation from areas south of the Litani River.

The sides agreed to create pilot zones where Lebanese forces take “exclusive control” to the exclusion of all non-state actors, though no timeline was set.

Why it matters: A ceasefire is only as durable as the party that can break it.

More than 2,000 people had been killed in Lebanon and over a million displaced by mid-April.

Israeli strikes killed at least 10 people in southern Lebanon Wednesday, the same day the framework was reached.

Driving the news: Hours after the announcement, the war continued on the ground and the rhetoric hardened.

Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz said the military would continue its fire and operations and keep a presence in the southern “security zone.”

A drone strike near Khalde hit a vehicle on the coastal highway just south of Beirut, the closest attack to the capital since Trump asked Israel to spare it.

Trump confirmed a tense call with Netanyahu and said he wanted to separate the tracks: “I’d like to separate it… because it is separate.”

What they’re saying: The signatories framed the deal as a path to peace. The parties who can sink it framed it as conditional or illegitimate.

Israel Katz, Israeli Defense Minister — “This reflects the reality we have created in Lebanon so far.”

Mahmud Qomati, senior Hezbollah official — the group will “not accept a partial ceasefire.”

Abbas Araghchi, Iranian Foreign Minister — any attack on Beirut would trigger a “full-scale resumption” of war.

Yes, but: Disarming Hezbollah without its consent is the stated goal of every Western government in the region, and the pilot-zone mechanism is a real attempt to put Lebanese state forces, not Israeli ones, in control. The framework is not nothing. But Beirut wants a nationwide cessation first while Israel demands disarmament first — and neither side can compel the militia to choose.

Between the lines: Both governments need this deal to exist more than they need it to hold. Lebanon’s state gets to look sovereign; Israel gets to look like it ended a war on its terms. The structural truth no statement names is that the only actor who decides whether the guns go quiet was treated as an object of the agreement rather than a signatory to it. Tehran has already announced it does not consider the Lebanon front separable from the wider war, even as Trump insists it is.

What’s next:

Political and security tracks reconvene the week of June 22 toward a comprehensive agreement.

Watch whether Israeli operations in the south stop, slow, or continue — the first real test of whether “ceasefire” describes anything on the ground.

Iran says its drone and missile attack on Kuwait was retaliation for recent U.S. military actions, but the strike left at least one person dead and more than 60 injured at Kuwait International Airport. Kuwait condemned the attack, India confirmed one of its citizens was killed, and fears are growing that the already fragile U.S.-Iran ceasefire could collapse entirely. The Strait of Hormuz remains a flashpoint as tensions continue to rise across the Gulf. #TruthOverSpin #TheDupreeReport

President Trump reportedly erupted at Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu during a heated call over Israel’s actions in Lebanon, warning that further escalation could derail U.S.-Iran peace talks. According to Axios, Trump accused Netanyahu of acting disproportionately and damaging Israel’s global standing. The dispute highlights growing tensions between Washington and Jerusalem as cease-fire efforts, regional stability, and negotiations with Iran hang in the balance.

Kevin Hassett says Americans are spending more because they’re optimistic about the future, pointing to rising wages, low unemployment claims, and stronger incomes for key workers. But many consumers tell a different story. Grocery prices remain elevated, gas costs are higher, and credit card delinquencies have reached their highest level in 15 years. The debate comes down to a simple question: Are Americans feeling economic confidence, or simply paying more to maintain the same standard of living?

A federal judge ordered Trump to answer fraud allegations by June 12 and paused his anti-weaponization fund — a case where the president sued an agency he runs and the two sides never fought.

NEED TO KNOW

Judge Williams reopened Trump’s dismissed IRS suit and ordered him to respond to fraud claims by June 12

She halted work on the $1.776 billion fund the settlement created while she investigates

Trump was both plaintiff and head of the defendant agency, and no judge ever ruled on the merits

MIAMI, FL (TDR) — A federal judge reopened President Trump’s dismissed IRS lawsuit Friday and froze the $1.776 billion fund his settlement created, ordering him to answer allegations the deal was a fraud on the court.

The big picture: This is a separation-of-powers problem wearing a tax-leak lawsuit’s clothing. Trump sued an agency he controls, that agency declined to defend itself, and the two produced a settlement that moved taxpayer money and granted him broad immunity, with no judge ruling on the merits. U.S. District Judge Kathleen Williams, an Obama appointee, now wants to know whether the parties were ever truly adverse.

Williams wrote she is “empowered to investigate serious misconduct” in a case before her.

Her four-page order directs Trump, his adult sons, and the Trump Organization to respond by June 12.

She paused all work on the fund pending the inquiry.

Why it matters: The fund and its immunity grant carry real money and real legal shielding, both frozen.

The settlement created a $1.776 billion “Anti-Weaponization Fund” for people who say the government wrongly targeted them.

A later addendum shielded Trump, his family, and affiliates from “any and all” claims the government could bring.

The suit had sought $10 billion over a contractor’s leak of Trump’s tax records.

Driving the news: Williams acted Friday afternoon, two days after a bipartisan group of retired judges asked her to step in.

The order followed a motion from 35 former federal judges, appointed by presidents of both parties, calling the settlement “a product of collusion.”

Williams cited New York Times reporting that the IRS had drafted a memo of defenses the Justice Department never raised.

Trump had voluntarily dismissed the suit May 18, two days before court-ordered briefs on its legitimacy were due.

What they’re saying: The administration routed questions away from itself.

Norman Eisen, counsel for the former judges — “The judges and their counsel greatly appreciate the seriousness with which the court is addressing these grievous allegations,” per reporting on the order.

The White House referred questions to the Justice Department, which did not immediately respond.

Yes, but: Nothing has been proven. Williams has not found fraud. She ordered briefing, the earliest stage of an inquiry, and her order frames the collusion claims as allegations the movants “advance,” not findings she has made. Retired judges filing a motion is advocacy, not a verdict, and Trump’s team has until June 12 to argue the case was legitimate and the dismissal proper. The headline is that the question is now before the court, not that the answer is in.

Between the lines: The structure is the scandal, whatever the inquiry finds. When one person is both the plaintiff and the head of the defendant, a “settlement” is not two opposing sides testing claims. It is a self-transaction that borrowed a courtroom’s authority. The 25-page defense memo the government never used is the tell: the IRS had arguments and chose not to make them. That is the fact neither a friendly nor a hostile framing can explain away.

What’s next:

Trump, his sons, and the Trump Organization must respond by June 12.

Williams will then decide whether to formally reopen the case for a fraud inquiry.

The fund stays frozen until she rules.

When the same person sits on both sides of a lawsuit, what should a court owe the public before letting them call it settled?
