A Minnesota woman accused of using a racial slur toward a 5-year-old Black child has raised over $670,000 through the crowdfunding platform GiveSendGo. The incident sparked widespread backlash, but many conservative influencers and media have portrayed her as a victim, leading to significant donations.
The altercation reportedly occurred in a Rochester park. The woman, identified as Shiloh Hendrix on the GiveSendGo page, allegedly called the child the N-word after claiming he "took my son’s stuff." A bystander, Sharmake Omar, recorded the exchange where she defended her comment. The child, Omar noted, is autistic, and his family is originally from Somalia.
Local police have forwarded their investigation to prosecutors for possible charges. NBC News has not yet confirmed the woman’s identity.
Crowdfunding Trends in Controversial Cases
The case has drawn attention to the growing use of GiveSendGo, a platform popular among conservatives, for controversial fundraising efforts. While the site is not exclusively conservative, it has frequently supported individuals tied to polarizing incidents.

For example, pro-insurrection lawyer John Eastman used GiveSendGo to raise funds for his defense related to his alleged role in efforts to overturn the 2020 election results. Similarly, Arizona rancher George Alan Kelly and Daniel Penny, accused in racially charged cases, raised significant amounts using the platform.
These cases highlight how crowdfunding has amplified polarizing narratives, drawing both sympathy and criticism. Critics argue these campaigns exploit political divisions and normalize harmful behavior. Supporters counter that they provide legal and emotional support for those who feel unfairly targeted.
The Conservative Narrative of Victimhood
Many conservative influencers have framed Hendrix as a victim of cancel culture. They argue she faces undue persecution for expressing her opinion. This narrative aligns with broader trends in right-wing media, which frequently emphasize perceived attacks on free speech and traditional values.
President Donald Trump’s rhetoric has further fueled this dynamic. His messaging often portrays conservatives as victims of an overreaching liberal agenda, reinforcing a sense of shared grievance among his supporters.
Ethical Implications of Crowdfunding for Controversy
The financial support for Hendrix raises critical questions about the ethics of crowdfunding platforms. Should platforms allow campaigns for individuals accused of harmful actions? And how do these campaigns impact societal norms?
The trend also underscores the need for transparency and accountability. While platforms like GiveSendGo enable support for legal and personal difficulties, they also risk amplifying divisive rhetoric. Balancing free speech with ethical responsibility remains a crucial challenge.
