Former President Donald J. Trump addressed a recent assassination attempt during a town hall event in Flint, Michigan, where he also received acknowledgment for the "very nice" calls from both President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris.

Trump shared these details with the audience while in conversation with Arkansas Governor Sarah Huckabee Sanders, his former White House press secretary. He recounted the calls from Biden and Harris, emphasizing the civility amidst political rivalry.

The gathering at the Dort Financial Center initially responded with boos at the mention of Harris's call but soon transitioned into cheers and applause as Trump shifted focus back to his political agenda. The assassination attempt that Trump referred to occurred in Butler, Pennsylvania, in July, with a more recent plot unfolding in West Palm Beach, Florida. In this latest incident, suspect Ryan Wesley Routh was allegedly armed with an AK-47-style rifle targeting Trump but was thwarted by Secret Service intervention.

Trump expressed his desire to personally thank a vigilant witness who played a crucial role in identifying Routh by photographing the license plate of his vehicle. He also commented on Routh's sophistication and efforts to erase any traceable elements by removing the weapon’s serial number.

In light of these events, both Biden and Harris publicly condemned political violence. Chris LaCivita, a senior advisor to Trump's campaign, highlighted that these incidents have not deterred the former president's schedule or commitments.

During the town hall, Trump humorously linked attempts on his life to his impactful presidency and reiterated his controversial stance on imposing significant tariffs on cars manufactured in Mexico by Chinese companies. He provocatively connected such policies to why he might be targeted.

Trump also emphasized Michigan's automotive industry throughout the evening, critiquing its decline but promising revival under policies he advocated for, suggesting a future where Michigan could reclaim or surpass its historical prominence in auto manufacturing.
