A staff member for Rep. Jerry Nadler (D-N.Y.) was briefly detained and handcuffed by Federal Protective Service (FPS) officers last week during a controversial encounter at Nadler’s district office in Manhattan, sparking sharp criticism of Department of Homeland Security (DHS) tactics. Nadler accused the Trump administration of using “intimidation tactics” and called the incident a “dangerous overreach.”
The incident unfolded Wednesday as protests occurred outside an immigration courthouse housed in the same building as Nadler’s office. According to a DHS spokesperson, FPS officers responded to reports of protesters possibly entering the congressman’s office. Their stated goal was to conduct a security check to ensure the safety of federal employees in the facility.
DHS Responds to Protests
In a statement to the media, DHS asserted, “Based on earlier incidents in a nearby facility, FPS officers were concerned about the safety of those present.” Officers reportedly encountered four individuals in Nadler’s office, one of whom allegedly became “verbally confrontational and physically blocked access” to the premises. The individual, later identified as a Nadler staffer, was detained in the hallway for the duration of the check.
Video Footage Sparks Outrage
Video footage of the incident, which surfaced online, captured officers accusing Nadler’s staff of “harboring rioters.” The staff member is heard crying as officers placed them in handcuffs.
Nadler Condemns DHS Actions
Nadler condemned the event in a strongly worded Saturday statement, asserting that DHS “forcefully entered” his office without justification. “This reckless behavior demonstrates a blatant disregard for legal boundaries,” Nadler said. He further accused President Donald Trump and DHS of “sowing chaos in our communities” and using “aggressive, heavy-handed tactics” across the country.
Concerns Over Due Process
Nadler also criticized DHS’s expedited removal process, alleging it denies due process to both undocumented immigrants and U.S. citizens. “If this can happen in a Member of Congress’s office, it can happen to anyone—and it is happening,” he warned.
DHS Defends Its Actions
DHS maintains no arrests were made, claiming the situation was “quickly de-escalated.” However, Nadler’s remarks underscore growing concerns over federal intervention in local matters.
