• President Trump applauded the Department of Government Efficiency for reducing bureaucracy but distanced himself from Elon Musk’s leadership style. The administration is expected to accelerate federal workforce reductions following a Supreme Court decision that lifted previous legal blocks on mass agency layoffs under Executive Order 14099.

WASHINGTON, D.C. (TDR) — President Donald Trump signaled support for the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) during a White House Cabinet meeting on Tuesday, while subtly criticizing the agency’s prior direction under tech billionaire Elon Musk. The remarks come as the administration prepares for sweeping federal workforce reductions and budget cuts targeting what it calls “inefficient” government operations.

“We could have done it differently,” Trump said. “I would have done it differently, a little bit, maybe.” Though he did not elaborate, Trump hinted at a shift in leadership approach, noting that “some would have done it exactly the way it was done.”

Federal workforce reductions underway

DOGE has been at the center of a cost-cutting campaign aimed at eliminating what the administration calls redundant federal spending. More than 1,300 Environmental Protection Agency employees exited through the deferred resignation program, according to agency data released this week. The Trump administration has proposed extending similar cuts across several departments.

Following the Supreme Court’s recent decision to uphold Executive Order 14099, federal agencies are no longer bound by lower court restrictions preventing mass layoffs. The ruling enables the White House to accelerate its plans for large-scale staffing reductions, outlined in a directive issued to agency heads in January.

A February memo from the Office of Management and Budget stated the government remains burdened by “unproductive and unnecessary programs that benefit radical interest groups,” adding that such programs have made the government “costly, inefficient and deeply in debt.”

Tensions with Musk continue

Trump’s comments also followed a renewed rift with Musk, who recently lost his temporary special status with the federal government. The president last week urged DOGE to reconsider any active contracts with Musk-affiliated companies, suggesting a more cautious approach toward public-private partnerships.

In response to Musk’s reported efforts to launch a new political movement called the “America Party,” Trump appeared unfazed.

“I think it’ll help us,” he said. “Third parties have always been good for me. I don’t know about Republicans, but for me.”

Will the administration’s focus on government efficiency deliver measurable savings—or simply shift political power within Washington?
