- Japan has suspended its annual military review due to heightened security threats from China, Russia, and North Korea.
- Defense officials say the strain on Self-Defense Forces makes the ceremonial event unsustainable under current conditions.
- The move follows intensified Chinese military drills near Japan and growing concerns over regional instability.
TOKYO, Japan (TDR) — Japan’s government has announced it will suspend its highly choreographed annual Self-Defense Forces (SDF) review, citing mounting operational demands amid an increasingly hostile security environment driven by China, Russia, and North Korea.
The defense ministry said the decision would remain in effect until there is a “significant change” in the strategic situation. Officials described the current climate as the most severe and complex since the end of World War II. The review, which traditionally rotates between the ground, maritime, and air branches each autumn, serves as both a public morale-booster and a display of readiness.
This year, the Maritime Self-Defense Force was set to host a naval review in Sagami Bay, Kanagawa Prefecture. Preparations require about 5,000 personnel over a month and tie up defense equipment for two months — a strain Japanese officials say is unacceptable while responding to constant military activity from neighboring powers.

Defense Minister Gen Nakatani said there is “no scope for the slightest gap” in SDF readiness, stressing that surveillance and training must take priority over ceremonial events.
Rising Chinese Military Pressure
The announcement follows Chinese naval drills in June that saw the Shandong and Liaoning aircraft carriers operate together in the Pacific for the first time. Hundreds of fighter jet take-offs and landings took place, with some aircraft flying dangerously close to Japanese surveillance planes. Tokyo lodged a formal protest with Beijing, calling the moves unprecedented.
Shift in Defense Posture
The SDF review had already been scaled back in recent years due to the pandemic, with reduced troop participation and no public attendance. The suspension reflects a broader Japanese policy shift toward operational readiness over public demonstrations, part of Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba’s pledge to bolster military capacity in partnership with the United States under President Donald Trump.
By placing readiness over ceremony, is Japan signaling a long-term shift toward a war footing in the Pacific?
