Throughout the season, the Las Vegas Aces have openly discussed the challenges of achieving a three-peat. After navigating through a turbulent regular season and facing off against the top-seeded New York Liberty in a demanding semifinal series, the No. 4 Aces encountered an even steeper challenge in their quest for a third consecutive championship.

However, their journey came to an end on Sunday when they were defeated by the Liberty 76-62 in Game 4, losing the best-of-five series 3-1. The New York Liberty, on their own historic quest for the franchise's first title, will now advance to the WNBA Finals for the sixth time, marking their second consecutive appearance. The opponent they will face is set to be decided on Tuesday when Minnesota and Connecticut battle it out in a decisive Game 5 in Minneapolis.

The Liberty have shown dominance over Las Vegas this year, winning six out of seven matchups including all three regular-season games. "They've been the best team all year long," remarked Aces coach Becky Hammon after their loss. "They deserved this win; they worked hard for it throughout the year." Despite her team's defeat, two-time MVP Breanna Stewart remained focused: "We haven't achieved our goal yet," she stated after contributing 19 points, 14 rebounds, 5 assists, and 4 blocks to her team's victory. She emphasized that despite advancing past Las Vegas in an emotionally charged series for various reasons, there remains a collective feeling of being unfulfilled.

Achieving a three-peat has only been accomplished once in WNBA history by the Houston Comets from 1997 to 2000. In recent decades, only major league teams like the New York Yankees and Los Angeles Lakers have managed such feats in their respective sports leagues. "It's incredibly difficult," said A'ja Wilson of Las Vegas about attempting a three-peat. She highlighted how every season presents new challenges with different team dynamics and increased competition as every opponent aims to defeat you.

Despite trailing for most of Game 4 against New York, Las Vegas remained within reach until falling behind significantly in a fourth quarter dominated by New York’s aggressive play which began with a commanding 16-2 run. This game mirrored some of Las Vegas’ struggles throughout this season - reliance on Wilson who scored efficiently but lacked sufficient support from her teammates whose performance could not replicate previous seasons' success rates.

Coach Hammon expressed frustration at her team’s defensive lapses earlier in the series and acknowledged that while her team possessed exceptional talent individually, they did not perform cohesively as needed this season likening them more to good rather than excellent teams.

This season proved particularly challenging for Las Vegas under Hammon's leadership as they faced unexpected setbacks early on including key player injuries and off-court controversies that put additional pressure on the team dynamics.

After managing to extend their playoff run with a convincing win against Brooklyn in Game 3 which revived hope following two initial losses away from home, Hammon along with her players faced disappointment as they processed ending a season without celebrating another championship together.

The Aces’ resilience despite these adversities highlights both individual dedication and collective effort put forward throughout this challenging season while also acknowledging areas requiring improvement moving forward.

The New York Liberty’s journey reflects strategic enhancements made since last offseason aiming at strengthening its roster around core talents such as Stewart and new additions that played pivotal roles including rookie Leonie Fiebich despite facing challenges themselves during playoffs.

As both Sabrina Ionescu and Breanna Stewart reflect on their victory over Las Vegas emphasizing growth through adversity faced during these matchups they remain mindful of unfinished business heading into Finals seeking redemption from last year’s outcome aiming at concluding this successful campaign with ultimate victory ahead.
